HP marks 100th PageWide Advantage 2200 as Marquis scales digital books

Marquis Book Printing has installed an HP PageWide Advantage 2200 Press at its Montmagny, Quebec facility, an event HP is marking as the 100th worldwide installation of the Advantage 2200 platform.

Completed in August 2026, the installation replaces an older inkjet printing system and expands Marquis’s capacity for high-quality colour book production. The new press prints on both coated and uncoated substrates and adds inline coated book production, broadening Marquis’s application range. The company plans to use it for high-end four-colour books, yearbooks, book covers and specialised educational publications, serving publishers seeking greater flexibility and shorter turnaround times.

The investment aligns with Marquis’s shift toward just-in-time book manufacturing, particularly relevant in Quebec where average print runs tend to be shorter. Digital inkjet lets publishers order quantities closer to actual demand, reducing large inventories and limiting unsold or obsolete stock. The press’s wider substrate compatibility and improved image quality also let Marquis serve more demanding colour work while keeping shorter-run economics intact.

David Tessier, vice president of sales at Marquis and general manager of Marquis Graphic Studio & Laurentien, said the installation reflects the company’s long relationship with HP and delivers the colour quality and flexibility needed to respond to changing customer requirements.

For HP, the 100th Advantage 2200 is a milestone in the adoption of its production inkjet technology across book manufacturing and commercial printing. Barbara McManus, vice president and general manager of HP PageWide, said the achievement shows printers increasingly using digital inkjet to balance quality, productivity and flexibility. Lakeside Book Company’s continued investment also reflects the growing importance of digital manufacturing within large book-production organisations.

The broader implication is competitive. As the Advantage 2200 expands substrate compatibility and image quality, the economic case for offset in medium-run colour books weakens further. Publishers gain flexibility; printers gain the ability to serve demanding colour work without inventory risk. Marquis’s August go-live, replacing an older inkjet system, shows the technology curve is steep enough that even recent installations are now being superseded by higher-capability successors.

The installation underscores a quiet revolution in book manufacturing. Where long runs once dictated offset economics, production inkjet now lets publishers print closer to true demand, shrinking warehouses of slow-moving stock and the waste that comes with it. Marquis’s Montmagny operation, serving a Quebec market where average runs trend shorter, is a textbook case of just-in-time book production enabled by digital.

Barbara McManus, vice president and general manager of HP PageWide, framed it as evidence that printers are increasingly trusting digital inkjet to balance quality, productivity and flexibility. Lakeside Book Company’s repeated investment also signals that large book producers now treat inkjet as core infrastructure rather than a niche supplement.

There is a sustainability dividend too. Printing to actual demand rather than to forecast slashes the volume of pulped or pulped-again unsold books – a meaningful environmental gain at a time when publishers face scrutiny over waste. For Marquis, the combination of shorter runs, broader substrates and lower obsolescence risk strengthens both its commercial proposition and its environmental credentials, a dual benefit that resonates with the publishing clients it serves across North America.
