This Converter Just Bought Its Second Digital Corrugated Press — and It’s Selling Capacity to Its Rivals

Most companies buy a second press to do more of their own work. Vanguard Companies bought its second one to do other people’s work too — and that subtle shift might be the most interesting part of this story.

The US converter has installed an HP PageWide C550VP Digital Press at its Kansas City operation, sitting alongside its existing HP PageWide C500. That makes Vanguard one of the first US firms to adopt the newer C550VP platform. But the real headline isn’t the machine. It’s what Vanguard plans to do with the spare capacity: offer digitally printed corrugated sheets to other converters who don’t have digital printing of their own.

Stop and think about that. In an industry famously protective of its capacity and margins, Vanguard is essentially opening its digital press up as a service bureau for competitors. It’s a confidence move — and a smart one.

Why does it work? Because digital corrugated is still unevenly distributed. Plenty of established box makers and display producers run conventional lines brilliantly but have never justified the capital outlay for a digital press. For them, short runs, seasonal campaigns, test programmes and versioned graphics are either impossible or painfully expensive. Vanguard is positioning itself as the “yes, we can” partner for exactly those jobs — no plate costs, minimal setup, fast turnarounds.

The two-press setup also buys something less obvious but hugely valuable: redundancy. When you run a single digital line and it goes down, or demand spikes, you’re stuck. With two platforms, work can move between them to keep programmes on schedule. For brands and retailers running time-sensitive launches, that resilience is worth real money.

Vanguard is leaning on HP PrintOS as the digital backbone — giving visibility into press status, job queues, progress and performance, plus analytics and predictive maintenance. That’s the unglamorous operational maturity that separates a press purchase from a real production strategy. Knowing your machine’s health before it fails is the difference between a smooth quarter and a frantic one.

Sustainability gets a mention too, and it’s not just greenwashing. Digital printing eliminates plates and slashes setup waste, wash-ups and the associated ink, chemical and water consumption. For brands under pressure to clean up their packaging footprint, a digital corrugated partner is an easy win — and Vanguard knows it.

But here’s the strategic heart of it: Vanguard is running a hybrid model. Jobs get routed to conventional or digital production based on run length, turnaround, customisation and other factors. Digital isn’t replacing analog; it’s handling the work analog does badly — short, customised, fast. That’s the mature reading of the digital-versus-conventional debate that still rages in some boardrooms. The answer was never either/or. It was both, intelligently routed.

For other converters, Vanguard’s move is a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge: if a rival can now offer digital corrugated without owning the press, what’s your differentiator? The opportunity: you might not need to spend millions to access digital capability. The capacity-as-a-service model lowers the barrier for everyone, which grows the overall pie of digitally printed packaging.

The wider trend is clear. As brands demand shorter runs, faster launches and more customisation, digital corrugated capacity becomes a strategic asset — and those who have it are finding ways to monetise it beyond their own four walls. Vanguard’s second press isn’t just a capacity upgrade. It’s a business-model experiment in an industry that’s finally getting comfortable sharing.
