Canon and DigiTech Built an Industrial Flatbed That Fits in Shops That Can’t Fit an Industrial Flatbed

Every growing print shop hits the same wall. You want industrial output — the speed, the rigidity, the “we can take any job” confidence — but you do not have an industrial footprint. Your floor is full. Your ceiling is low. Your budget is real. Canon U.S.A. and DigiTech just aimed a product straight at that exact pain, and the result is the Texas ST2/X1 UV LED flatbed printer.

The name is a mouthful; the idea is clean. Built on the structural engineering of DigiTech’s larger LT3 series, the ST2/X1 borrows the serious bones — a welded steel frame, an electromagnetic linear drive system, and a 50-by-100-inch vacuum table with zoned control — and packs them into a machine sized for operations that cannot host a full production line. The pitch is industrial reliability without the industrial real estate.

Let’s talk numbers, because they are the point. The Texas ST2/X1 reaches up to 2,024 square feet per hour in a two-pass corrugated sign mode. That is genuine high-volume throughput, aimed at signage, retail displays, and other rigid-substrate work. Its six-channel ink configuration runs CMYK plus options for white, orange, gray, or varnish — so you can print on non-white materials, build backlit graphics, or lay down specialty finishes without swapping systems.

Substrate handling is where small shops feel the pinch, and here the machine is generous: it takes materials up to six inches thick. That reaches well beyond flat signage into thicker, more interesting rigid work that often gets outsourced. Printheads are Kyocera Dual Channel/Single Row units with four-level grayscale, dropping variable-sized ink at 4, 6, 10, and 14 picoliters for precise dot placement, smooth gradients, and fine detail. The ink set is formulated to resist smudging and fingerprints — the kind of durability a display graphic actually needs when strangers touch it all day.

The labour-saving details are the quiet stars. An integrated automatic unloader can pull a finished board off the table in as little as 10 seconds. Pneumatic registration pins and a reversible airflow vacuum system make loading and unloading almost foolproof. Each colour carries a 1.75-litre reservoir, so you are not refilling mid-job like a barista between espressos. The net effect: operators keep throughput high while juggling incoming jobs and downstream finishing — exactly the multitasking a lean shop demands.

Kiyoshi Oka, Executive Vice President at Canon U.S.A., described the platform as combining DigiTech’s manufacturing know-how with Canon’s national sales and service footprint, letting customers “expand production without compromising space or quality.” That support backbone matters more than spec sheets. A brilliant machine with no local service is a liability; a solid machine with a real service network is an asset. Canon is leaning on that difference.

Is it the biggest, fastest, most automated flatbed on the planet? No. DigiTech’s own LT3 remains the better fit for fully integrated print-to-cut lines. But that is the point. The ST2/X1 is the pragmatic middle — for commercial and wide-format printers who want to chase bigger contracts, add premium rigid graphics, and grow capacity without knocking down a wall.

For the owner of a shop staring at a full floor and a long wish list, this is the kind of news worth a phone call. Industrial productivity used to mean “buy a building first.” The Texas ST2/X1 is part of a broader shift where that equation finally loosens — automation and reliability arriving in a package a normal business can actually fit.
