Kyocera debuts KJ4A-EX600RC-HX printhead for white ink, varnish and digital embellishment

Kyocera Corporation has announced the KJ4A-EX600RC-HX, a new circulating industrial inkjet printhead developed for label and packaging applications that require white ink, varnish, and decorative effects. Scheduled to go on sale in November 2026, the printhead combines 600 dpi resolution with an effective print width of 108.33 mm and production speeds reaching 100 metres per minute.

Its proprietary ink circulation architecture moves ink close to the nozzles, helping prevent pigment settling and drying while maintaining consistent ink temperature and stable droplet formation. The design supports reliable operation with pigment-based and higher-viscosity UV inks while reducing cleaning and maintenance requirements during production restarts. Kyocera is targeting equipment manufacturers developing digital printing and embellishment systems capable of handling increasingly varied label and packaging requirements.

The new printhead introduces several technical improvements over Kyocera’s previous KJ4A-AL model. Maximum droplet volume increases by 23% to 21 picolitres, supporting greater white-ink opacity and thicker varnish deposits for raised and textured decorative effects. The supported ink viscosity range expands from 6-7 mPa.s to 8-11 mPa.s, broadening the range of UV formulations that can be used. The maximum drive frequency also doubles from 20 kHz to 40 kHz, enabling printing speeds up to 100 metres per minute, among the highest productivity levels in Kyocera’s UV-compatible printhead portfolio.

These developments support applications requiring opaque white layers, glossy coatings, dimensional varnish, and foil decoration while maintaining the consistency needed for industrial production. As label and packaging converters manage shorter runs, more product variations, and greater customization, the ability to digitally apply white ink, varnish, and decorative layers at production speeds becomes increasingly valuable.

The introduction reflects growing demand for digital embellishment technologies that deliver premium visual and tactile effects without the setup requirements of conventional processes. Equipment developers gain additional flexibility in designing systems for high-deposition applications, while the circulating ink architecture supports more stable production and reduced maintenance.

Manufactured at Kyocera’s Kirishima Plant in Kagoshima, Japan, the KJ4A-EX600RC-HX represents another step in extending industrial inkjet beyond conventional image reproduction into functional and decorative packaging applications. White ink and varnish have become central to the value proposition of digital label presses, where shelf impact and tactile finish command price premiums, and a printhead that can deposit them reliably at speed is a key enabler.

For original equipment manufacturers, the doubled drive frequency and wider viscosity window mean they can build faster, more capable embellishment modules without redesigning their core architectures. That, in turn, should accelerate the spread of digital finishing from high-end specialty work into mainstream label and flexible packaging production, where cost-per-impression and uptime are decisive.

That should accelerate the spread of digital finishing from high-end specialty work into mainstream label and flexible packaging production, where cost-per-impression and uptime are decisive. Manufactured at Kyocera’s Kirishima Plant in Kagoshima, Japan, the KJ4A-EX600RC-HX reflects a broader industry shift extending industrial inkjet beyond image reproduction into functional and decorative packaging applications that add measurable value at the shelf.

The label embellishment market has expanded well beyond luxury, as brands across personal care, beverage and cosmetics use texture and opacity to differentiate on crowded shelves. Digital application of white ink and varnish removes the tooling and setup that conventional screen and foil processes require, making premium finishes viable on shorter runs. Kyocera’s wider viscosity compatibility also matters because UV formulations vary widely between suppliers, and equipment makers prefer printheads that accept that diversity without bespoke tuning. The competitive field includes other Japanese and global suppliers, but Kyocera’s circulating architecture targets the maintenance and reliability pain points that have historically limited industrial uptime. Selling to original equipment manufacturers rather than end printers, Kyocera’s success depends on press builders adopting the KJ4A-EX600RC-HX into next-generation embellishment systems; with a November 2026 launch, the printhead should appear in partner machines through 2027 as those designs reach market.

Kyocera’s decision to manufacture the new printhead at its Kirishima Plant underscores the company’s commitment to industrial inkjet as a strategic growth area rather than a peripheral line. The facility has long produced precision components, and applying that discipline to high-frequency, high-viscosity printheads signals confidence in demand for embellishment-grade production. The November 2026 on-sale date positions the KJ4A-EX600RC-HX to enter partner product cycles in 2027, a timeline that matters because press builders plan new models well in advance. Kyocera’s broader printhead portfolio serves markets from textiles to industrial coding, and the company has consistently emphasised reliability and service life as differentiators against rivals competing mainly on headline specifications. If equipment makers adopt the new head at scale, it could widen the availability of fast, high-deposition digital embellishment across mainstream label and packaging lines.
