VistaPrint Scales Apparel Output with Kornit Apollo Adoption

VistaPrint has expanded its digital apparel production capabilities by adopting Kornit Apollo, a move that adds roughly 25,000 units of weekly manufacturing capacity and cuts production turnaround times to about one day. The investment reflects the company’s continuing effort to improve speed, efficiency and product availability for millions of small and medium-sized businesses across Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia — the customers who rely on VistaPrint for everything from business cards to branded merchandise.

The company has evolved well beyond its commercial-printing roots. Today VistaPrint offers an integrated portfolio of business cards, marketing materials, promotional products, apparel, packaging and signage, supported by design services and digital ordering tools. That breadth turns the business into a one-stop custom-commerce platform, and apparel has become a central pillar of that strategy as demand for personalized and promotional clothing keeps climbing. Nick Dalby, Director of Category Experience for PPAG at VistaPrint, said the company’s manufacturing strategy focuses on delivering the right combination of cost, speed, quality and product selection through its expanding Cimpress production and supply-chain network.

The Apollo adoption builds on a partnership with Kornit Digital that began in 2007 and has spanned successive generations of digital textile printing equipment, including Kornit Atlas and Atlas MAX systems. VistaPrint selected Apollo to build on earlier improvements in cycle time, print quality and wash fastness while achieving higher throughput and lower production cost per unit. The company reports that Apollo operates at approximately three times the speed of its previous production process, allowing incoming apparel orders to move through manufacturing far more quickly. Automation has also simplified garment handling and improved workflow consistency, supporting more efficient use of both equipment and labor.

The operational detail is instructive. Kornit provided online training before installation and on-site technical support during the first six months of production, a handoff model that helped VistaPrint reach full utilization across three production shifts approximately three months after beginning operations. That rapid ramp — from install to three-shift saturation in a single quarter — demonstrates how mature digital textile platforms have become. The technology risk that once surrounded on-demand apparel has largely been engineered out, leaving a deployable, scalable production system.

Why does apparel matter so much to a company founded on paper printing? Because customization is the common thread. The same digital-ordering and on-demand manufacturing logic that revolutionized business cards applies even more powerfully to clothing, where every customer wants different text, logos and designs. VistaPrint’s challenge is not creative — it is industrial: how to absorb enormous, spiky, highly individualized order volumes without sacrificing turnaround. Apollo’s throughput and automation are the answer to that scaling problem.

The broader trend here is mass customization maturing into mass production. On-demand apparel once implied slow, premium, low-volume output. Investments like VistaPrint’s reframe it as a high-throughput, cost-competitive manufacturing category in its own right. For the promotional-products industry especially, where seasonal peaks and event-driven spikes are the norm, the ability to add 25,000 units per week of dependable capacity is strategically significant.

There is also a supply-chain story. By producing apparel closer to demand and on demand, VistaPrint reduces the inventory risk and overseas freight exposure that plague traditional garment manufacturing. Combined with the Cimpress production network, the model favors responsiveness over speculation — make what is ordered, when it is ordered, where it is needed.

For Kornit, a marquee customer operating at three-shift utilization is precisely the proof point the digital-textile segment needs. It shows that Apollo is not a laboratory curiosity but a workhorse capable of anchoring high-volume commercial apparel operations. For VistaPrint, it is the engine behind a promise to small businesses: custom apparel, fast, affordable and reliably available.

The investment also reflects a broader redefinition of what a printing company is. VistaPrint began as a purveyor of paper products and has steadily become a custom-manufacturing platform spanning multiple physical media. Apparel is simply the category where on-demand economics are currently most compelling, but the underlying model — aggregate demand, route to flexible production, fulfill fast — applies to packaging, signage and promotional goods alike. Apollo strengthens the apparel leg of that strategy, but its real significance is as evidence that the platform thesis scales.

There are implications for the wider decorative-apparel market as well. As large platforms like VistaPrint industrialize on-demand production, smaller decorators face a choice: compete on hyper-local service and niche customization, or partner with the platforms whose scale they cannot match. The bar for “fast and affordable” keeps rising, and investments of this magnitude are what raise it. For brand owners and small businesses, the winner is clear — more reliable access to custom apparel at prices that make experimentation painless.

Ultimately, the Apollo investment is a bet on the continued convergence of printing and manufacturing. VistaPrint is no longer simply selling printed products; it is operating a distributed custom-manufacturing network where speed and reliability are the product. Apollo’s throughput is what lets that promise scale without sacrificing the flexibility that defines on-demand production.
