Ahmedabad has quietly become one of India’s most interesting clusters for flexographic prepress expertise, and Akshar NX Digital is making sure it stays that way. The Gujarat-based prepress specialist has placed an order for a Flexcel NX 5080 System from Miraclon, adding a second Flexcel platform to its production floor and sharpening its focus on the fast-growing flexible packaging segment.
The new system is scheduled to be installed in January 2027 at a newly acquired location, a move that forms part of the company’s wider geographical expansion strategy. Rather than simply adding capacity at its existing site, Akshar NX Digital is building out a second production base — a signal that the company expects demand for flexible packaging platemaking in western India to keep climbing well into the next decade.
The Flexcel NX 5080 will complement the Flexcel NX 4260 System already running at the company’s Ahmedabad facility. Running two formats side by side gives the trade shop meaningful flexibility: the wider 5080 format covers large-format flexible packaging work, while the established 4260 continues to serve the standard label and packaging jobs that have anchored the business for years.
Investment Beyond the Press
Notably, the company is not spending on imaging hardware alone. Alongside the new system, Akshar NX Digital is investing in color management solutions, reflecting what management describes as a renewed focus on building the prepress capabilities needed to support customers in the flexible packaging segment. In a market where converters increasingly demand predictable, repeatable color across multiple presses and substrates, prepress partners who can guarantee process control are becoming harder to find — and more valuable.
Ahead of the main installation, the company has already brought in a 5080-format processing and finishing line equipped with LED exposure. According to the company, this configuration provides increased productivity while enhancing consistency in plate production. Getting the supporting infrastructure in place early also shortens the commissioning window for the new imager, meaning customers should feel the capacity benefit soon after the January installation.
Why Flexcel NX
The decision followed what the company describes as a careful evaluation of the technologies available in the market. Speaking about the investment, Malavania said: “As we expand our business and renew our focus on flexible packaging, we wanted to ensure that we were investing in technology with a strong track record in this market. We evaluated the different technologies available to us before making our decision. Flexcel NX Technology has an established position in packaging and particularly in flexibles, which gives us confidence that it provides us with the right platform to support our growth.”
That track record matters in the flexible packaging segment, where tolerance for error is low. Flexible structures are printed on thin, extensible films, and defects that might be tolerable on a paper label can doom an entire production run on a laminate. Flat-top dot technology and the plate-making consistency the Flexcel NX ecosystem is known for are central reasons why converters continue to specify it for demanding flexible work.
Customer Feedback as Validation
Malavania also pointed to the experience of the company’s existing customer base as a decisive factor. “The feedback we receive from customers using Flexcel NXH Plates has been very positive, particularly around the results they are able to achieve on press,” he said. “That real-world experience was important to us. Ultimately, this investment is about giving our customers the technology, consistency and prepress support they need to succeed, while positioning Akshar NX Digital strongly for the opportunities we see in flexible packaging.”
The comment highlights an often-underestimated dynamic in the trade prepress business: printers choose suppliers as much as they choose technologies. A plate shop that can demonstrate consistent on-press results, back them with technical support, and keep pace with new formats becomes an extension of its customers’ own operations.
The Bigger Picture: India’s Flexible Packaging Momentum
Akshar NX Digital’s move fits a broader pattern across the Indian subcontinent. Flexible packaging continues to take share from rigid formats on cost, logistics and sustainability grounds, and the printing technology behind it is racing to keep up. Registrations at trade events such as Labelexpo and LOUPE India have grown steadily, and equipment suppliers have responded with India-specific product launches and expanded local support teams.
For a trade shop, the calculus is straightforward. Converters who once sent wide-web plate work to larger metros or overseas suppliers are increasingly looking for regional partners who can deliver quickly and consistently. By pairing a proven imaging platform with a wider format and disciplined color management, Akshar NX Digital is positioning itself to capture exactly that demand.
The January 2027 installation timeline also gives the company room to complete customer onboarding and workflow integration without disruption. Between now and then, the focus will be on building out the new facility, validating color workflows across both Flexcel formats, and preparing the technical team for the additional production volume.
For India’s flexible packaging supply chain, the message is familiar but worth repeating: the prepress layer is no longer a commodity. As brands demand shorter lead times, finer reproduction and verified sustainability credentials, the shops that invested early in proven platforms — and in the process discipline that surrounds them — are the ones that will win the next wave of work.
The competitive context sharpens the picture. Ahmedabad and the surrounding Gujarat industrial belt host a dense concentration of flexible packaging converters serving food, FMCG and agro-processing customers across western India. Trade prepress shops that anchor themselves in such clusters benefit from short logistics loops — plates can move from imaging to pressroom within hours when a converter needs an emergency change. Akshar NX Digital’s second facility extends that responsiveness across a wider customer base, and the 5080’s larger format means fewer multi-piece plate assemblies for wide-web work, reducing both make-ready time and registration risk on press.
Sustainability considerations also favor the investment. Flat-top dot structures created through the Flexcel NX workflow are widely used to reduce ink consumption and enable thinner laminate structures — attributes brand owners now audit as part of packaging sustainability commitments. Prepress partners who can document those capabilities find themselves invited into brand conversations that commodity plate suppliers never see, which in turn raises the value of the entire trade relationship.
