Sontara launches Fogra-certified rPET printing cloths that cut product CO2 by 40 percent

Sontara, a Magnera brand, has introduced a sustainable printing range aimed at helping offset printers reduce environmental impact without compromising the cleaning performance the pressroom depends on. The range includes Sontara Sustainable PrintMaster, developed for automatic blanket cleaning systems, and Sontara Sustainable PrintClean for manual cleaning applications. According to Sontara, the products are made from post-consumer recycled PET sourced from GRS-certified suppliers and natural wood pulp, delivering 40 percent lower product CO2 emissions than standard Sontara printing cloths. For a consumable that every offset plant burns through in volume, a double-digit emissions cut is not trivial.

“Printers are under increasing pressure to improve sustainability, but performance remains non-negotiable,” said Lorenzo Vaira, Product Manager Europe for Sontara and Chicopee. The tension Vaira names is the central problem in greening the pressroom: environmental claims that compromise output simply do not survive contact with a demanding production schedule. A washcloth that leaves lint, streaks, or residue is a false economy regardless of its carbon credentials, so the credibility of this launch rests on whether the rPET-based material cleans as well as the incumbent it replaces. Sontara’s answer is certification.

Sustainable PrintMaster is positioned as the first rPET-based automatic blanket-cleaning washcloth to achieve Fogra certification, a detail worth dwelling on because Fogra’s stamp carries real weight in the graphic arts. A third-party technical body attesting that a sustainable alternative meets performance criteria gives printers a defensible reason to switch, and it spares them from running their own risky validation on the live press. Sustainable PrintClean brings the same material approach to manual cleaning of blankets, rollers, plates, and general pressroom equipment, extending the environmental benefit beyond the automated cylinder.

The supply-chain angle adds another layer. Sontara notes that European production can reduce transport-related CO2 emissions by up to 70 percent compared with Far Eastern supply. In a year when freight volatility and the carbon cost of long-distance logistics are both climbing the agenda, localizing production of a high-volume consumable is a credible sustainability lever, not merely a marketing line. For printers under scope-3 reporting pressure from brand clients, being able to point to a locally made, certified, lower-carbon washcloth helps answer procurement questionnaires that increasingly ask for exactly this evidence.

Blanket and roller cleaning is an under-appreciated hotspot in print’s environmental footprint. The cloths are single-use by design, the volumes are large, and the alternatives have historically leaned on solvent-heavy chemistries. Moving the substrate to recycled PET and natural pulp, while keeping the cleaning efficacy, attacks the problem on two fronts at once: the material’s embedded carbon and the distance it travels. Whether the 40 percent and 70 percent figures hold across every customer’s real-world mix will depend on baselines, but the directional improvement is clear.

For Magnera, the launch also illustrates how legacy industrial brands are reframing mature product lines around ESG value rather than competing purely on price. As printers face tighter customer mandates and their own internal sustainability targets, consumable suppliers that can document verifiable reductions will win share from those offering only vague green language. Fogra certification is the differentiator that turns a sustainability story into a procurement-ready specification.

The broader signal is that the decarbonization of print is now reaching the small, unglamorous items rather than stopping at the headline purchases like presses and energy. Washcloths will never make a keynote slide, but multiplied across thousands of pressrooms they represent a meaningful, repeatable, and measurable emissions reduction that printers can act on immediately without capital expenditure. That is exactly the kind of change that compounds across an industry.

The certification angle deserves emphasis because it lowers the risk of adoption. Pressroom managers are rightly skeptical of green claims that compromise output, and a Fogra stamp provides independent reassurance that the rPET cloth cleans to spec. For Magnera, which inherited the Sontara brand from the former DuPont and Berry Global consumer-business combinations, the launch is also a statement that a legacy consumable line can be re-engineered around circularity without losing the performance that made it a default choice. The European production claim, a reduction of up to 70 percent in transport-related CO2 versus Far Eastern supply, aligns with the broader reshoring of print supply chains that accelerated after recent freight shocks. For printers, the appeal is practical: a switch that satisfies procurement questionnaires and internal sustainability targets without capital expenditure or a learning curve. Small, repeatable, verifiable changes like this are how an industry actually decarbonizes, far more than headline press purchases that few can afford.

Beyond the environmental numbers, the launch fits a broader shift in which pressroom consumables are judged on their full lifecycle rather than purchase price alone. As brand owners tighten supplier questionnaires, a documented, certified, lower-carbon washcloth becomes a quiet selling point that distributors can lead with, turning a commodity item into a small but defensible advantage.
