Mark Andy appoints David Stark to lead DACH and Benelux sales

Mark Andy has strengthened its European commercial organisation with the appointment of David Stark as head of markets for the DACH (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg) regions. Stark took up the role on October 1, 2026, stepping into one of the most strategically significant sales territories for the Missouri-headquartered narrow-web press and finishing specialist.

The appointment is notable because Stark is not a career sales executive brought in from outside the industry. He began his working life in 2001 as a press operator at one of Germany’s leading label printing companies, building hands-on experience across multiple printing processes with a particular focus on multi-process label production. That foundation, Mark Andy argues, gives him a credibility with customers that a conventional sales background cannot easily replicate.

Over the following two decades Stark broadened his experience considerably. He ran his own printing-related business, spent several years responsible for global sales of post-press equipment, and then moved into the sale of narrow-web presses within the German market. Along the way he qualified as a label printer specialising in multi-process printing at the Johannes Gutenberg Schule in Stuttgart in 2004, and from 2008 to 2010 completed a two-year programme to become a state-certified print and media technician. He later spent two years at a rotogravure company focused on furniture and flooring decor, where he handled application technology and sales.

In a statement, Stark said his varied background lets him view a printing company’s needs through the lens of its business model, the jobs it runs, its daily challenges and the technology it relies on. “I am starting my new role at Mark Andy with great energy and see tremendous potential for the company across the DACH and Benelux regions,” he said, adding that he wants to work with the wider Mark Andy Europe team on new investment projects and further strengthen the company’s regional presence.

Tom Cavalco, vice president international sales at Mark Andy, welcomed the appointment. He emphasised that Stark brings “a very valuable combination of production knowledge, entrepreneurial experience and many years in printing press sales,” and noted that the DACH and Benelux regions are strategically important to Mark Andy from both a European and a global perspective. Cavalco expressed confidence that Stark’s market knowledge, business relationships and experience will help increase the company’s market share in the region.

The move comes as the European label and package-printing sector weighs a series of overlapping pressures: rising energy and material costs, tighter sustainability regulation such as the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, and continued demand for faster, more automated and digitally enabled production. Suppliers are responding by deepening local technical and sales support, and by positioning experienced field professionals who can speak the language of the pressroom rather than simply quoting specifications.

For Mark Andy, which competes in the narrow-web flexographic and hybrid press segment against the likes of Nilpeter, Omet, Gallus and Bobst, a stronger direct presence in Germany in particular is a clear priority. Germany remains the largest label-printing market in Europe, and the Benelux region is home to a dense cluster of converters serving pharmaceutical, food and premium-label customers.

Stark’s appointment also reflects a broader industry trend in which equipment manufacturers increasingly value operators-turned-salespeople, recognising that converters are more likely to trust recommendations from someone who has run a press, fought with registration and lived with uptime pressures. As automation and software take a larger role in the buying decision, that shop-floor credibility is becoming a differentiator in its own right.

Mark Andy said it expects the reinforced regional team to accelerate engagement with converters evaluating new investments in the coming quarters, and to support existing customers on upgrades, service and application development across the DACH and Benelux footprint. The company’s leadership pointed to Stark’s combination of production know-how and entrepreneurial experience as exactly the profile needed to grow share in a mature but still innovation-hungry European market.

The appointment also arrives as converter investment cycles lengthen. With financing costs still elevated, many label printers are stretching the life of existing presses and scrutinising every capital request more closely before committing. In that environment a field leader who can model payback in the language of the pressroom, rather than reciting a brochure, is better placed to convert interest into orders when budgets finally reopen. Stark’s profile also fits the way modern label businesses actually buy: decisions are increasingly made jointly by production managers, sustainability leads and owners, not by a single purchasing department, and a salesperson who has run a press can hold that conversation credibly with each of them. Europe’s narrow-web segment is meanwhile shifting toward hybrid and digitally embellished presses, where the value case rests on shorter runs, faster changeovers and lower waste rather than raw speed. A representative who has lived those trade-offs is more likely to position the right configuration and to keep the relationship alive through the long service life of the equipment. Mark Andy’s bet, then, is less about one hire than about a style of customer engagement that matches how the market has matured.
