German Printer Gonzo Design Cuts Odors and Boosts Quality With Fujifilm Acuity Triton

Gonzo Design, a German advertising and print production specialist based in the town of Hirzenhain, has reported a noticeable improvement in both print quality and workplace air quality after installing Fujifilm’s Acuity Triton wide-format printer. The upgrade replaced an aging eco-solvent machine and introduced water-based UV ink technology into the company’s daily production.

Founded in 1993, Gonzo Design provides advertising, textile printing, digital printing, signage, and vehicle lettering services. Like many small and mid-sized print providers, the company had grown accustomed to the trade-offs of solvent printing: strong odors, ventilation demands, and limitations when working with heat-sensitive substrates. Production Manager Jan Henrich said the single biggest change has been the working environment, with the new technology substantially reducing the smells previously associated with the company’s eco-solvent operation.

The Acuity Triton uses Fujifilm’s AQUAFUZE water-based UV ink, a formulation engineered to combine the environmental and safety profile of water-based chemistry with the performance and curing behavior expected of UV printing. Gonzo Design installed the machine in October 2025 after a demonstration at Fujifilm Europe’s headquarters in Ratingen, where the company was able to evaluate the printer against its specific application mix before committing.

Beyond air quality, the new printer has solved several persistent production headaches. Gonzo Design had previously experienced color cracking when stretching printed vehicle wrap vinyl, a defect that compromises both appearance and durability. Henrich reports that the Acuity Triton has eliminated that problem. The company can also now print calendared vinyl without the heat-related shrinkage issues that plagued its previous equipment, expanding the range of jobs it can accept with confidence.

The printer is currently used primarily for self-adhesive films and banners destined for indoor and outdoor applications. Looking ahead, Gonzo Design plans to extend its capabilities into transparent decorative materials, fabrics, and wallpapers, areas where the low-odor, low-energy profile of AQUAFUZE is especially attractive.

The technology also supports immediate finishing and low-energy curing, helping the company reduce production delays while broadening the materials it can handle. For a business that balances print quality, production efficiency, and employee working conditions, the investment represents a deliberate attempt to improve all three at once rather than trading one against another.

Gonzo Design also operates a Fujifilm Acuity Prime for small-format direct-to-film sticker applications, and the company has maintained a long-standing relationship with Fujifilm across multiple technology generations. Henrich characterized the Acuity Triton as a genuine alternative to conventional latex and solvent printing for the company’s applications, delivering better production performance and greater substrate flexibility.

Chelsea Carter, Head of Wide Format Marketing at Fujifilm, pointed to Gonzo Design as a representative example of a print provider using newer ink chemistry to improve not only manufacturing output but also the day-to-day environment for its staff. For sign and display printers weighing an equipment refresh, the installation illustrates how advances in ink formulation can ripple outward to affect finishing efficiency, substrate handling, and even recruitment and retention by making the shop floor a more pleasant place to work.

The case also speaks to a wider shift in wide-format printing, where regulators, customers, and employees are all pushing suppliers toward lower-emission production. Water-based UV inks are not a universal replacement for every solvent application yet, but installations like Gonzo Design’s show the practical gains are already real for mainstream signage and vehicle graphics work.

As environmental expectations tighten across the European print sector, examples of successful solvent-to-water-based transitions will likely become reference points for other converters considering similar investments. Gonzo Design’s experience suggests the payback extends well beyond the printed sheet.

What makes the Gonzo Design story instructive is that the benefits were measured in human terms before they were measured in euros. Reduced odor and lower energy curing are not headline-grabbing specifications, yet they directly affect staff retention and the kinds of jobs a shop can safely accept. For a 30-year-old business, continuity of skilled labor matters as much as throughput. The Acuity Triton also illustrates a maturing value proposition for water-based UV: it no longer asks the printer to surrender application range in exchange for sustainability. By eliminating cracking on stretched wraps and shrinkage on calendared vinyl, the technology removed two concrete failure modes that had previously pushed work away. That is the kind of evidence converters trust more than brochures. As the European Union continues to tighten solvent emissions rules, early movers like Gonzo Design are building operational habits and customer expectations that late adopters will eventually be forced to match. The installation is therefore less a one-off purchase than a small but real rehearsal for the cleaner, more flexible print shop the regulation is already designing.
