Cartes Taps Hans Huijsing to Grow Laser Die-Cutting and Embellishment Business in Northern Europe

Italian laser die-cutting and embellishment specialist Cartes has appointed Hans Huijsing as strategic consultant to develop business across the Benelux and Northern Europe. The move strengthens Cartes’ international growth strategy as it targets markets where high-value label embellishment carries strong potential.

Huijsing will draw on a career that includes international roles at Konica Minolta and Xerox, supporting Cartes’ relationships with customers and partners worldwide. Based in Moglia, Mantova, Cartes has spent more than five decades pairing research and development with proprietary technologies — most notably its pioneering work in laser die-cutting and its patented ILC (Invisible Laser Cutting) technology. Its latest innovation, Jet D-Screen, is a digital embellishment system engineered to deliver tactile and visual effects with a flexible, efficient route to premium label production.

Cartes’ established markets already include North and South America, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Portugal — particularly countries with strong wine, cosmetics and luxury sectors where embellishment adds brand value. The new collaboration is intended to open further opportunities in the Benelux and Northern Europe, regions where premium labels and decoration are in steady demand.

Virgilio Micale, sales director at Cartes, emphasized the fit. “Our technologies are developed with a clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities our customers face, and our long-term relationships with converters around the world are a fundamental part of our growth,” he said. “Hans brings valuable international experience and a strong understanding of the printing industry, which will further strengthen our ability to support our customers and develop new opportunities in markets where high-value embellishment has significant potential.”

Huijsing returned the compliment, pointing to Cartes’ technology portfolio and its ability to translate innovation into real converter value. “Its approach to embellishment, together with its longstanding commitment to R&D, makes the company particularly well positioned for markets where brands increasingly look for differentiation and premium label products,” he said, adding that he looked forward to contributing his international experience to the team and its customers.

For Cartes, the appointment is less about a single hire and more about a deliberate push into higher-margin, design-led label segments. As brands chase shelf differentiation through texture, foiling and laser-cut effects, suppliers that can pair R&D depth with local commercial presence stand to gain. Huijsing’s remit — bridging Cartes’ Italian engineering heritage with Benelux and Northern European market dynamics — fits that ambition.

The embellishment segment has proven resilient even as commodity label volumes face price pressure. By leaning on ILC and Jet D-Screen, Cartes is betting that converters will keep investing in capabilities that let brand owners tell a premium story on the shelf. Huijsing’s task is to make sure those converters, in markets Cartes has historically under-served, hear that message directly.

The embellishment segment has proven unusually resilient. While commodity label volumes face relentless price pressure, value-added decoration — foiling, casting, embossing, laser-cut effects — lets converters defend margin and give brand owners shelf differentiation. That dynamic makes commercial hires like Huijsing’s strategically significant: Cartes is not just selling machines, it is selling a route to premium positioning for labels in wine, cosmetics and luxury goods.

Cartes’ technology bet is distinctive. Its patented ILC (Invisible Laser Cutting) and the newer Jet D-Screen digital embellishment system position it against conventional finishing and against rivals such as ABG and Grafotronica in the digital embellishment race. Laser cutting’s appeal lies in tool-free, highly flexible conversion — valuable where short runs and fast changeovers dominate. Jet D-Screen extends that into tactile and visual effects with a digital, efficient workflow.

Huijsing’s Benelux and Northern Europe remit targets markets with dense concentrations of high-value label converters serving premium brands. His background at Konica Minolta and Xerox — both deeply embedded in the printing channel — should help Cartes translate engineering strengths into commercial relationships. The challenge will be local execution: premium embellishment buyers expect responsive service and application expertise, which is precisely what a regional consultant is meant to deliver.

If Cartes can pair its R&D heritage with sharper local presence, it stands to capture share in a segment where differentiation, not price, drives buying decisions.

Success will be measured in local reference accounts and repeat orders rather than headlines. If Huijsing can convert Cartes’ engineering strengths into named premium-label wins in the Benelux and Nordics, the appointment will look prescient. If not, it becomes a reminder that in embellishment, commercial proximity matters as much as the technology itself — and that the right consultant can be the difference between a great product and a sold one.

Regionally, the Benelux and Nordics are attractive because premium brands there prize differentiation and have the budgets to pay for it. Cartes’ challenge is to convert that demand into local installed success without diluting its Italian engineering culture. Huijsing’s channel experience is well suited to that bridge. If the consultant model delivers even a handful of reference wins, it will validate Cartes’ bet that embellishment growth in Northern Europe is worth a dedicated commercial push.
