Loupe India 2026 Spotlights the Rise of Mid-Web Flexible Packaging for Label Converters

Loupe India 2026, the rebranded Labelexpo India event, has made one trend impossible to ignore: flexible packaging has moved from the sidelines to centre stage for the label industry. In a detailed analysis published by Andy Thomas-Emans, strategic director at Loupe Global, the show demonstrates how narrow and mid-web technology developed for label production is now being repurposed to convert flexible packaging materials at scale.

The shift is not new, but its momentum is. Over the past twelve years Labelexpo – and now Loupe – has watched digital and in-line flexo presses grow wider and more capable. Today, in-line flexo presses configured for flexible packaging typically run at around 26 inches (670mm) wide, while the HP Indigo 200K reaches 30 inches (762mm). Flexible packaging remains feasible on narrower web presses, but the larger format of flexible packs favours the wider web.

What exactly counts as flexible packaging here? Primarily shrink sleeves and pouches, plus films for form-fill-seal, stickpacks and sachets. Flexo presses built for these applications are often configured with extended drier stations to handle water-based coatings, and may include in-line lamination modules. More commonly, lamination is handled off-line, and the show floor has revealed a new generation of mid-web laminators aimed squarely at this growing market. Some laminators have even been fitted with digital embellishment units to apply tactile finishes.

The strategic prize is clear. Label converters can apply skills they already possess – digital and in-line flexo or offset label printing – to flexible packaging. The one real knowledge gap is materials. Unlike labels, flexible packaging is the direct product container, so converters must understand barrier properties, migration regulations, multi-lamination layer behaviour, sealing properties and web tension.

But the effort pays off. Agile label converters are building entirely new businesses in short-run, value-added flexible packaging that complements and strengthens their label work. Where wide-web converters struggle, label converters can win with niche service: short-run, multi-SKU, customised, value-added, short lead-time and rapid response.

India is one of the fastest-growing packaging markets in the world, fuelled by rising consumer spending, rapid industrialisation and e-commerce expansion. Annual flexible packaging output exceeds five million tonnes, overwhelmingly commodity film produced cheaply on wide-web gravure and CI flexo. Yet today’s consumer environment is fragmented across food, personal care, healthcare and online retail, where the ability to switch quickly between formats matters more than raw output.

That is perfect territory for challenger brands demanding eye-catching designs, innovative formats and short runs with short lead times. Continuing innovation in coating technologies gives converters further differentiation: specialist films now offer better barrier protection without extra lamination, design-for-recycling and greater post-consumer recycled content.

On the show floor, the evidence is everywhere. Suppliers of shrink sleeve and flexible packaging films include Addon Filmtech, Cosmo Films, Chiripal Poly Films and Prakash Shrink Pack. UPM is promoting fibre-based flexible packaging alongside its labels portfolio, including new barrier-coated materials. Siegwerk recently developed a high-barrier mono-layer PP pouch with Enplanter that won the Labels and Labeling Sustainability award at Loupe Americas 2026.

Machinery suppliers are equally active. Multitec is exhibiting its S3S 670mm press in an 8-colour configuration and a narrower 430mm S2 printing both labels and unsupported film. Webtech demonstrates its 720mm Aeroflex S5 and 520mm Aeroflex S4. Wanjie India, a joint venture with Bipiin Offset, has developed a 560mm shaftless offset press. Spande offers the AC-series mid-web press from 700-900mm, while Omet brings the Varyflex V2 and XFlex X7.

On the digital side, HP Indigo is demonstrating a narrow-web 6K+ printing both labels and flexible packaging, and Flint Group Digital Xeikon can print flexible materials on its TX500 with Titon toner. As Thomas-Emans concludes, although labels remain at the core of Loupe India 2026, mid-web flexible packaging is now a fantastic growth opportunity for label converters willing to invest in materials know-how.

The practical implication for converters is that the flexible packaging opportunity is not a distant possibility but a near-term one. Label printers already own the digital and flexo platforms needed; what they lack is materials science. Forward-looking converters are closing that gap through supplier partnerships, trial runs and staff training rather than large capital bets. The risk of inaction is being squeezed out of exactly the high-margin, short-run work that defines modern brand requirements.

For equipment suppliers, Loupe India 2026 is a proving ground. Demonstrating flexible packaging on the show floor converts sceptical label printers into flexible packaging prospects. The presence of both international names and Indian manufacturers such as Multitec, Webtech and Wanjie India signals a maturing domestic supply chain capable of supporting local converters end to end. As India’s consumer market fragments into more SKUs and challenger brands, the converters who move first on mid-web flexible packaging will likely capture the loyalty of the next generation of FMCG and personal-care brands.
