Meteor Inkjet Unlocks FUJIFILM Dimatix STARFIRE PhaseMaster for Hot-Melt Printing

Meteor Inkjet, a leading supplier of industrial inkjet printhead driving solutions, has announced dedicated drive electronics for the new FUJIFILM Dimatix STARFIRE PhaseMaster printhead. The availability lowers a key integration barrier for machine builders targeting hot-melt and functional-print applications, where precise, repeatable deposition of materials at temperature is the whole game.

Clive Ayling, Meteor Inkjet’s managing director, framed the launch as a milestone for industrial inkjet. “The launch of the STARFIRE PhaseMaster represents an exciting development for the industrial inkjet market by taking the STARFIRE up to the 125°C of the Galaxy hot-melt head,” he said. “Users of hot-melt inks now have a high-resolution, repairable printhead option with four times as many nozzles per head.” That nozzle density matters: more nozzles per head translates into higher throughput and finer detail without multiplying the number of print bars a system builder must integrate.

Hot-melt jetting, Ayling noted, has the potential to become a key enabling technology, particularly in additive manufacturing, where precise and repeatable deposition of functional materials is critical. “Many functional fluids only achieve the physical properties necessary for inkjet drop formation at high temperature, instantly cooling and reverting to their original state when the drop lands,” he explained. In other words, the very property that makes these fluids useful — they flow only when hot — is also what makes them hard to print. A printhead and drive system validated at 125°C is what turns that constraint into a workable process.

Meteor’s dedicated solution provides full compatibility with the Meteor Datapath and the company’s family of printhead drivers, together with advanced waveform tools including drop-watching and open waveform design capability. High-speed data delivery lets the STARFIRE PhaseMaster operate at its full rated speed, while integration with Meteor Datapath software and support from Meteor’s worldwide applications team help system developers accelerate integration and development. For an original equipment manufacturer, that combination — proven electronics, mature software and global support — is often the difference between a research prototype and a shippable product.

The partnership logic is clear. FUJIFILM Dimatix builds the printhead; Meteor builds the brain that drives it. By co-ordinating on the PhaseMaster, the two companies let system builders skip the hardest part of hot-melt development — coaxing a high-temperature head into reliable, repeatable jets — and focus instead on the end application, whether that is additive manufacturing, functional coatings or another temperature-sensitive deposition task.

There is a strategic thread here about where print is heading. As inkjet moves beyond decorative graphics into functional and industrial deposition, the value shifts from colour and speed to material science and process control. Hot-melt printing sits at that frontier: it deposits value, not just an image. By making a repairable, high-nozzle, high-temperature head accessible through turnkey drive electronics, Meteor and FUJIFILM Dimatix are quietly expanding the toolbox available to the next generation of functional-print machines.

Hot-melt inkjet is a quietly strategic frontier because many functional fluids only form droppable jets at elevated temperature, and by pairing FUJIFILM Dimatix’s higher-temperature PhaseMaster head with Meteor’s drive electronics and waveform tooling, the partnership lowers the integration barrier for machine builders targeting additive manufacturing and similar functional-print markets. That is where print stops being decorative and starts depositing value. The drop lands, cools and reverts to its original state, becoming part of a component rather than an image on its surface. Meteor’s full compatibility with its Datapath and printhead drivers, plus advanced waveform tools including drop-watching and open waveform design, lets system developers accelerate integration instead of fighting the physics of a 125 degree head. For an OEM, proven electronics, mature software and worldwide applications support are often the difference between a research prototype and a shippable product. The fourfold jump in nozzles per head also raises throughput and detail without multiplying print bars, a design win that compounds as machines scale. As inkjet moves from graphics into functional deposition, this kind of co-ordinated head-and-drive release is what expands the toolbox for the next generation of industrial printers. The repairable architecture matters as well, because in production environments a head that can be serviced in place protects uptime and total cost of ownership, two variables that decide whether a promising technology actually reaches the factory floor.

The commercial model behind the release is worth noting. Meteor sells the drive electronics and software, while FUJIFILM Dimatix supplies the head, so neither company asks a system builder to become an expert in the other’s domain. That division of labour shortens development timelines and reduces risk for OEMs entering hot-melt printing for the first time. Add Meteor’s worldwide applications team and the support story becomes as important as the silicon, because functional-print integrations live or die on tuning the waveform to a specific fluid. By making the PhaseMaster approachable through proven tooling, the partnership broadens the field of machine builders who can realistically ship hot-melt systems, which in turn grows the addressable market for both companies. In additive manufacturing and functional coating, where deposition precision determines part performance, that accessibility could accelerate adoption faster than any single headline specification.
