Firsta Group has completed temperature-resistance testing of its independently developed high-barrier ILC-BOPP coated base film, with key performance indicators meeting target requirements at 150 degrees Celsius. The validation expands the potential application of ILC-BOPP technology in high-temperature environments and gives packaging engineers another material option where both barrier and thermal resistance are required.
What Makes ILC-BOPP Different
ILC-BOPP uses an in-line coating process that integrates the functional coating into the BOPP film production process. Unlike the conventional off-line approach, in which the film is first produced and then coated separately, the technology carries out biaxial orientation of the polypropylene substrate and application of the functional coating within a single integrated production step.
That integration is not merely a manufacturing convenience. By coating in line, Firsta reduces energy consumption and minimizes volatile organic compound emissions during manufacturing, two metrics that matter increasingly to brand owners under tightening environmental specifications and to converters facing stricter plant-level emissions limits.
A Line Built for the Chinese Market
Firsta’s ILC-BOPP production line, developed in cooperation with German equipment manufacturer Brückner, officially began operations on October 18, 2025. According to Thomas, global electrical director at Brückner, the line was custom-designed around Firsta’s requirements and the specific needs of the Chinese market, where demand for high-barrier mono-material structures is growing fastest and where local supply is a strategic advantage.
As the packaging industry places greater emphasis on high-barrier performance, material simplification and recyclability, polypropylene-based high-barrier films are attracting growing attention. Conventional high-barrier structures often rely on combinations of PET, aluminum foil and metallized films. ILC-BOPP offers an alternative path toward simplified, potentially recyclable mono-material structures built from a single polymer family.
Where It Will Be Used
Firsta has already begun batch production of its high-barrier ILC-BOPP films, with potential applications including food packaging, pharmaceutical and medical packaging, electronic component protection and new energy materials. The newly validated temperature-resistant grade is intended for applications where both thermal resistance and barrier performance are required, a combination that opens formats such as microwaveable and heat-filled packs that mono-material films have struggled to serve.
The company said it will continue to advance the industrial-scale production of the temperature-resistant ILC-BOPP grade while further developing and validating high-performance functional film technologies for demanding packaging applications, signalling that the 150-degree result is an early milestone rather than a finished portfolio.
Why Mono-Material Matters
The recycling logic is simple. A pouch built from a single polymer family is far easier for a materials recovery facility to sort and reprocess than a laminate of dissimilar layers bonded with adhesive. Mono-material formats trade some of the performance headroom of multi-layer laminates for a dramatically cleaner end of life, and regulators in several markets are beginning to favor designs that can actually be recycled in practice, not only in theory.
High barrier has been the hard part. Keeping oxygen, moisture and aroma out of a product usually meant metallized or foil layers that break mono-material recyclability. In-line coated BOPP aims to deliver enough barrier from a single polymer system to make the trade-off worthwhile, and doing it at temperature-resistant grades extends that logic into hotter, more demanding packs.
For label and flexible packaging converters, Firsta’s validation is a signal that domestic Chinese supply of recyclable high-barrier film is maturing. As brand owners set public recyclability targets, converters that can source mono-material barrier film locally will be better placed to meet both the performance and the sustainability brief without importing complex laminates, and will be less exposed to volatile cross-border material costs.
The validation also highlights how Chinese film producers are moving up the value chain. For years, high-barrier mono-material film was dominated by a handful of global suppliers; domestic development like Firsta’s reduces import dependence and gives local converters a home-grown option with shorter lead times and local technical support.
None of this happens in isolation. Brückner’s role as equipment partner shows how German engineering and Chinese manufacturing continue to combine in the films that package Asia’s food and electronics. As more lines like Firsta’s come online, the economics of recyclable mono-material packaging improve, and the format becomes the default rather than the premium choice for brand owners under recyclability mandates.
The validation also widens where mono-material films can be specified. Heat-filled, microwaveable or hot-fill packs have traditionally needed multilayer structures to survive; a validated 150-degree grade lets brand owners consider recyclable BOPP for formats that were off-limits, narrowing the performance gap that has kept laminates in use and opening mono-material designs to new product categories.
For converters, the practical benefit is reduced risk. Sourcing a validated, temperature-resistant mono-material film from a domestic supplier shortens lead times and avoids the complexity of importing multi-layer laminates that may not meet local recycling rules. As more brands publish recyclability commitments, that simplicity becomes a selling point rather than a compromise, and Firsta’s line gives them a home-grown option to cite.
