Clariant Opens Two China R&D Labs, Completing an In-Country Innovation Ecosystem for Additives

Specialty chemicals group Clariant has launched two new research and development laboratories for its Additives business in China, one at the Daya Bay production site in Huizhou and one at the One Clariant Campus in Shanghai. The company said the move marks an advancement in its local innovation capability and supports its “In China, For China” strategy, a posture that has become central to how global suppliers defend share in the world’s largest chemicals market.

From Application Development to Full R&D

The newly established labs go beyond Clariant’s existing local application development capabilities, enabling the full synthesis and development of new additives entirely on Chinese soil, spanning from initial research through to pilot scale. By strengthening local R&D, the company said it can accelerate innovation to keep pace with market trends, respond more closely to customer needs in China and across Asia Pacific, and extend new solutions to global markets with greater speed.

That distinction is significant. Application labs help a supplier tune a known product to a local use case. A synthesis and development lab lets a supplier invent the product locally in the first place, which shortens the distance between a customer’s problem and a working formula and keeps more of the intellectual value inside the region.

Two Specialized Labs, One Integrated Vision

The Daya Bay R&D lab sits at Clariant’s flame retardants plant in Huizhou, inaugurated in 2023 and expanded with a second production line in November 2025, representing a total investment of 100 million Swiss francs. The new R&D lab builds on that foundation, focusing on next-generation flame retardant products. Equipped with reactors for both atmospheric and high-pressure synthesis, plus analytical instruments including TGA, DSC, XRF, GC and ion chromatography, the lab is also designed to support external collaboration with universities and innovation partners across China.

The OCC R&D lab in Shanghai, housed within the existing Additives Technology Center, is dedicated to performance additives including antioxidants, light stabilizers and waxes. Its capabilities span synthesis, analytics and a pilot-scale polycondensation facility, the kind of pilot capacity that turns a promising molecule into a scalable, manufacturable grade.

A Local Innovation Ecosystem

The launch is the latest step in Clariant’s local innovation ecosystem in China, where the company said it now has the full value chain in place: local R&D, local manufacturing and local partnerships. In November 2025, Clariant announced a joint venture with Fuhua to develop next-generation phosphorus-based flame retardants, and in the same month the second production line at the Cangzhou joint venture plant with Beijing Tiangang was inaugurated, producing Nylostab S-EED, a multifunctional additive, for China’s nylon industry.

With every element of the value chain now rooted in China, Clariant said it can offer customers across the region shorter lead times, faster technical support and solutions built for local application requirements, a message that resonates as supply-chain resilience climbs the agenda for brand owners who suffered through recent global disruptions.

Why It Matters for Packaging

Additives are the invisible workhorses of packaging. Flame retardants keep electronic and appliance packaging safe, antioxidants and light stabilizers keep films and labels from degrading on the shelf, and waxes tune slip and surface feel. As regulators and buyers push for safer, recyclable and lower-emission materials, the ability to develop those additives close to the customer shortens the path from regulation to compliant product.

Manuel Mueller, head of strategy and innovation for Clariant’s Adsorbents and Additives business, said sustainability-driven innovation is at the core of the strategy and that the expanded labs are an important milestone. “The new facilities will enable us to develop high-value specialty additives for plastics, coatings and adhesives with greater speed and precision, tailored to the needs of our customers in China and across global markets,” he said.

For converters and brand owners, the takeaway is that the center of gravity for additive innovation is shifting closer to where packaging is actually made and used, and suppliers that localize their R&D are positioning themselves as the default partners for the next generation of compliant, sustainable materials rather than as distant vendors shipping standard grades.

The move also reflects a broader restructuring of the global specialty chemicals industry, in which Western suppliers localize R&D to stay close to Asian demand instead of shipping finished grades from Europe. For Chinese converters, that means faster access to tailor-made additives and shorter innovation cycles, while for Clariant it protects relevance as local competitors mature.

The flame-retardant focus is especially timely. As electric vehicles, batteries and electronics expand across Asia, demand for safer, higher-performance retardants is climbing, and local synthesis capacity lets Clariant serve that demand without cross-border supply risk.

The implications reach beyond packaging films. Additives that improve process stability and end-of-life recyclability are increasingly written into brand specifications, and a supplier that can co-develop them locally is better placed to influence those specifications early. Clariant’s China labs therefore function as both a laboratory and a commercial listening post for the region’s fastest-moving end markets, turning customer feedback into formulation faster than a distant R&D center ever could.
