AI, Laser Marking and UV Tags: How Print Is Quietly Re-engineering Packaging

Packaging has long been about more than protecting a product, but modern print technology is taking that premise further than ever — adding intelligence, sustainability and interactivity without sacrificing visual impact. A wave of recent innovations shows how digital printing, finishing, inks and software are turning packs into data-carrying, traceable and more circular objects.

Sustainable packaging and paper specialist Mondi has developed a concept that combines a corrugated outer box with a recyclable, laser-marked flexible packaging, aimed at eCommerce and bag-in-box applications. Laser marking applies artwork directly onto the flexible packaging during converting, eliminating the need for conventional decorative printing and its plates. The result, Mondi says, is personalization, faster artwork updates and greater design flexibility, letting customers respond quickly to trends. The concept adapts across formats such as pre-made pouches and larger bags, and can incorporate bio-based feedstocks or post-consumer recycled content.

“Customers are under growing pressure to meet sustainability targets while managing increasingly complex product portfolios and changing consumer demands,” said Jens Koesters, manager of technical service, R&D and innovation at Mondi Consumer Flexibles. “This concept supports circularity with the use of bio-based materials and greater artwork flexibility in a single solution.” The appeal is that sustainability and agility arrive together rather than as a trade-off.

Traceability is the second front. Supermarket chain Aldi partnered with UK dairy cooperative Arla, inks maker Sun Chemical and recycling platform Polytag on a pilot that tracks milk-bottle packaging through the recycling process using UV-tagging. Sun Chemical’s specially developed ink on wrap-around labels carries comprehensive recycling data; invisible, UV-tagged labels were printed by Saica Flex directly onto Arla’s bottles using food-safe fluorescent ink. Once tagged packaging enters the recycling stream, Polytag’s detection units at materials recovery facilities capture barcode-level data in real time, giving brands and retailers visibility of the pack’s journey.

“This deployment marks an exciting milestone as the first commercial use of Sun Chemical’s fluorescent ink with Polytag’s technology,” said Stefaan D’hoore, director of business development at Sun Chemical. Aldi’s Luke Emery called it “an exciting step forward in how we use data to drive our sustainability strategy.” For brands, knowing exactly where packaging goes after use is becoming essential to credible circularity claims.

The third shift is smarter design workflows. Software firm Arden Software recently gave the first public preview of Impact Neo, its next-generation, AI-driven packaging design platform, at its user conference. Rather than treating AI as an add-on, Arden is building it around its CAD expertise, applying intelligence where it adds the most value — for example, understanding and matching design styles and structures. “For Arden, AI is not a gimmick,” said Jim Silianoff, president and CEO of Arden Software North America. “Our goal is to create truly intelligent solutions that help packaging professionals design smarter.” Arden already uses AI in its flagship Impact software through a Design Similarity feature that searches large design databases in seconds.

Taken together, these examples show print moving beyond putting graphics on a surface. Laser marking cuts waste and speeds changeovers; UV tagging makes recycling measurable; AI compresses design cycles and improves outcomes. For print companies, the opportunity is to move past traditional production and into applications that help brands meet sustainability and consumer-experience demands.

The throughline is enablement. Each innovation uses print — as a marker, a tag, a coated layer or a designed structure — to do something a plain package cannot: prove its origin, trace its end-of-life, or adapt its artwork overnight. As regulations tighten and consumers expect more from every pack, the printers and converters who master these tools will be the ones defining the next phase of packaging. The future of packaging, as FESPA puts it, is being shaped by technology — and print is at the heart of that transformation.

Underpinning all three examples is a regulatory and commercial push that shows no sign of easing. The EU’s packaging rules, alongside corporate net-zero commitments and consumer demand for transparency, are forcing brands to treat packaging as a data surface, not just a container. Print is uniquely placed to answer that demand because it can embed marks, tags and structures at the point of manufacture, often without adding parts or complexity. The winners will be converters who can offer brands a single supplier for graphics, functionality and intelligence. Software firms like Arden, meanwhile, are pulling design and production closer together, so that sustainability and performance are considered before the first proof rather than after. The net effect is a packaging value chain where print sits at the intersection of creativity, compliance and data — a far more strategic position than simply putting ink on a box. For FESPA, a community built around wide-format and speciality print, the lesson is that its members’ skills translate directly into these higher-value packaging applications.
