ACTEGA Bolsters North American Commercial Team With Two Strategic Hires

ACTEGA, the specialty coatings, inks, and adhesives supplier serving the flexible packaging and label industries, has strengthened its North American commercial and technical organization with two senior appointments. The moves are designed to deepen customer support across the region at a time when converters are demanding more localized technical expertise and faster response times.

The first appointment sees Edgar Contreras return to ACTEGA in a newly created role as Strategic Account Manager for New Business Development. In this position, Contreras will focus on high-potential multi-location accounts, increasing penetration across existing customers while coordinating cross-border opportunities that span the United States, Mexico, Canada, and selected markets in Central and South America. His mandate is explicitly long-term: building durable account relationships rather than chasing isolated transactions.

Joining him is Shawn Hendrix, who takes on the role of Technical Account Manager. Hendrix arrives with more than 25 years of print and packaging experience that cuts across flexographic, digital, and offset printing. His background includes extensive plant and operations leadership in pressure-sensitive labels, shrink sleeves, and related manufacturing environments, giving him a hands-on understanding of the production challenges converters face on the shop floor.

According to Mell C Bishop III, Vice President of Flexible Packaging at ACTEGA North America, the two hires reflect the scale of investment the company is making in its regional business. He noted that Contreras will concentrate on strategic account development across North America and selected international opportunities, while Hendrix will provide both technical and commercial support across a defined southern territory that includes Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and western Tennessee.

Together, the appointments aim to close the gap between strategic business development and day-to-day operational support. Too often, suppliers excel at winning accounts but struggle to sustain them through consistent technical service. By pairing a strategic growth focus with deep local technical coverage, ACTEGA is betting that it can support customers across the full lifecycle of a project, from the first exploratory conversation through routine production troubleshooting.

The flexible packaging and label segments have become intensely competitive, with brand owners pushing for faster turnaround, lower migration inks, and more sustainable substrates. That environment rewards suppliers who can put experienced people close to the customer. ACTEGA’s emphasis on cross-border coordination also acknowledges the reality of modern North American supply chains, where a single brand may run packaging lines in three countries and expects its material suppliers to follow.

For Contreras, the return to ACTEGA represents a chance to rebuild relationships he cultivated during a previous tenure, now applied to a broader strategic remit. For Hendrix, the role leverages a career spent inside converting plants, where knowledge of how inks and adhesives behave under real production conditions is often more valuable than theory.

The appointments also signal a broader trend in the specialty materials sector: as automation and digital print erode some traditional service models, suppliers are responding by investing in human expertise that cannot be replicated remotely. A technical account manager who can walk a press line, diagnose a defect, and recommend a formulation change remains a differentiator.

ACTEGA operates as part of the specialty division of a global chemicals group and supplies a wide range of products including overprint varnishes, laminating adhesives, and color concentrates used in food, beverage, and consumer goods packaging. The North American market has been a focal point for expansion as regional brands localize sourcing to reduce logistics risk.

While the company did not disclose financial terms, the strategic intent is clear. By reinforcing its commercial and technical bench in North America, ACTEGA is positioning itself to capture a larger share of a market where proximity, responsiveness, and application knowledge increasingly decide who wins the next contract.

The timing of the appointments is notable because North American flexible packaging has continued to outpace many other print segments, driven by e-commerce, single-serve formats, and demand for high-barrier, recyclable structures. Suppliers that once competed mainly on price now compete on formulation expertise and speed of support. Contreras and Hendrix together cover both ends of that equation: one opens doors and aligns multi-plant accounts, the other keeps them running. For converters evaluating material partners, the presence of a named technical contact with plant-level credibility can shorten qualification cycles that might otherwise stretch for months. ACTEGA’s decision to invest in people rather than only in product also reflects a maturing recognition that in specialty materials, the relationship is the product. As brand owners tighten supplier audits and push decarbonization targets down the chain, the suppliers most likely to retain share will be those who show up consistently, locally, and with answers. These two hires should be read in that context: a quiet but consequential bet on proximity as a competitive moat in a fragmented, fast-moving market.
