Sun Chemical Widens Metallic Ink Range as Brands Chase Shelf Impact Without Foil

Walk down any premium retail aisle and count the metallic finishes. Then consider that most of them represent a recycling problem. That tension, between the shelf impact brands want and the material simplicity recyclers need, is precisely the gap Sun Chemical is targeting with an expanded metallic inks portfolio aimed at converters and brand owners working across labels, folding cartons and flexible packaging.

The company has broadened its metallic offering across flexographic and gravure printing, with formulations available in water-based, solvent-based and UV-curable technologies. The breadth matters: it means the same visual effect can be specified across radically different production workflows without a converter having to redesign its process around the ink.

The pigment engineering underneath

What distinguishes an adequate metallic from an exceptional one is largely a question of flake geometry, and Sun Chemical’s portfolio spans several. Cornflake pigments, with their irregular edges, scatter light in a way that produces a softer, more diffuse sheen at relatively low cost. Silver dollar pigments, with smoother rounded edges and more uniform surfaces, reflect light more coherently and deliver noticeably higher brilliance. Vacuum metallized pigments, or VMP, are the premium tier: extremely thin, highly uniform flakes that lie flat on the substrate and produce genuine mirror-like results.

Giving converters access to all three within a single supplier portfolio is a practical advantage. It allows a printer to hold a consistent supply relationship while dialling the balance between brilliance, opacity, visual effect and cost performance according to what each individual job can carry. A private-label carton and a limited-edition spirits label do not need the same pigment, and forcing both onto the same specification wastes money at one end and disappoints at the other.

Sun Chemical develops these pigments internally, which is a meaningful structural point rather than a marketing line. Controlling pigment production means controlling batch-to-batch consistency, and metallic inks are notoriously unforgiving of variation. A slight shift in flake size distribution shows up immediately as a visible difference in gloss on a long production run.

Why demand is rising now

Jim Felsberg, Director of Product Management for Packaging Inks at Sun Chemical, framed the driver in terms of competing requirements. “Converters and brands are looking for solutions that combine visual impact with performance, flexibility and sustainability,” he said, noting that the metallic inks “deliver premium brilliance effects across a wide range of substrates and print processes, helping customers create distinctive packaging while supporting sustainable packaging initiatives.”

The retail context explains the urgency. Shelf environments are more crowded than ever, and the window in which a pack has to register with a shopper is measured in fractions of a second. Metallic finishes create depth, brilliance and differentiation that flat process colour simply cannot produce. In categories where the physical product is largely undifferentiated, the pack is doing a disproportionate share of the persuasion.

The recyclability argument

The most commercially significant claim in Sun Chemical’s announcement is the quietest one: that in certain applications, metallic inks can help brands reduce reliance on metallized films and foils while maintaining premium visual appeal.

This is worth unpacking. Metallized film and foil laminates deliver excellent metallic effect but create multi-material structures that are difficult or impossible to recycle through mainstream streams. As extended producer responsibility schemes tighten across Europe, and as recyclability-linked fee modulation makes non-recyclable packaging progressively more expensive, that structural complexity carries a rising financial penalty rather than merely a reputational one.

A metallic ink printed onto a mono-material substrate sidesteps much of that problem. The pack stays within a single material family and stands a far better chance of surviving a recyclability assessment. Whether the visual result fully substitutes for foil depends heavily on the application, which is why Sun Chemical’s language is careful and application-specific, but the direction of travel is unmistakable. Effects that used to require adding a material are increasingly being achieved by printing one instead.

Practical considerations for converters

Metallic inks are not drop-in replacements for conventional process colours, and converters evaluating an expansion into these effects should plan accordingly. Flake orientation is sensitive to application method, anilox specification and drying conditions. Water-based metallics behave differently from solvent systems in terms of flake alignment and settling. Overprint varnish choices can either amplify or completely destroy the intended effect. Pump and pipe shear can damage flakes before the ink even reaches the substrate.

These are all solvable problems, but they require technical support rather than a datasheet. Sun Chemical points to more than a century of experience in metallic pigments and a global manufacturing and service footprint offering regional technical support, which in this category is arguably as important as the formulation itself.

The bigger picture

The expansion tells you something about where packaging value is concentrating. Commodity printing continues to face relentless price pressure. Decoration, embellishment and shelf differentiation do not, because they are directly tied to a brand outcome the customer can measure in sales lift.

For converters, the strategic read is straightforward. Investing in the capability to execute high-quality metallic effects reliably, across substrates and process technologies, moves work into a category where the conversation is about brand performance rather than cost per thousand impressions. That is a considerably better place to be selling from.
