Sihl has launched a portfolio of polyethylene (PE) films with aqueous inkjet coating, introducing water-based inkjet printability to conformable PE label materials for the first time. The four-variant range is designed specifically for print-on-demand label production and actively targets compliance with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation’s (PPWR) mono-material requirements, where a PE label on a PE container represents one of the most straightforward paths to recyclability.
Why PE Labels with Aqueous Inkjet Matter
The label industry has been searching for material combinations that satisfy three often-competing demands: print quality, physical performance on the container, and end-of-life recyclability. Traditional label constructions have frequently required compromises. BOPP films print beautifully and offer excellent dimensional stability, but they are rigid and can lift or crease on curved and squeezable containers. PET labels bring heat resistance and clarity, but mixed-polymer label-on-container combinations complicate the recycling stream.
PE labels on PE containers solve the recycling problem because both components enter the same recovery stream without requiring separation. The challenge, until now, has been that PE films suitable for labels have been difficult to print with aqueous inkjet — the chemistry that enables water-based ink adhesion on synthetic films is fundamentally different from what works on paper. Sihl’s new coating technology bridges that gap, making it possible to print aqueous inkjet directly onto PE film labels with commercially acceptable quality, adhesion, and durability.
The Four Coating Variants
Sihl’s portfolio addresses a deliberately broad range of label applications through four coating variants. The IHG1 Gloss variant targets maximum print appeal for premium product labels where visual impact drives consumer choice. The IG1 Satin provides an elegant, understated finish suitable for cosmetics, personal care, and luxury goods. The ZM1 Matt BS5609 variant is engineered for water and chemical-resistant outdoor applications — the BS5609 certification is significant because it confirms the label can withstand immersion in seawater for three months, a requirement for chemical drum labels and maritime shipping applications. The IM1 Matt Universal rounds out the range for a broad spectrum of indoor uses.
This breadth is strategic. A label converter serving multiple market segments — food and beverage, cosmetics, industrial chemicals, logistics — can now source PE-based aqueous-inkjet-compatible label materials from a single supplier, simplifying procurement and qualification. The conformity of PE films to curved surfaces and squeezable containers, combined with low rigidity, also makes them well-suited for small labels on narrow-diameter containers where conventional BOPP or PET films would struggle to conform without creasing.
The PPWR Compliance Angle
Sihl is explicit about the regulatory motivation behind the launch. The combination of PE label on PE container printed with aqueous inkjet technology directly supports PPWR mono-material requirements, which are driving brand owners and converters toward packaging designs that streamline recycling. Mono-material packaging eliminates the need for separation of incompatible polymers, reducing contamination in the recycled material stream and improving the quality and value of recyclate.
For label converters, the Sihl portfolio represents a practical tool for responding to customer demands for recyclable packaging. Rather than explaining why current label materials cannot meet mono-material targets, converters can offer a solution that satisfies print quality, container performance, and regulatory compliance simultaneously. As PPWR deadlines approach — with 2030 as the target for all packaging to be recyclable — materials innovations like Sihl’s aqueous-inkjet PE films will become increasingly important to the label industry’s product development pipeline.
The technical breakthrough that makes aqueous inkjet on PE film possible lies in Sihl’s coating formulation. Uncoated PE film is hydrophobic by nature — water beads on the surface rather than spreading and absorbing. Aqueous inkjet inks, as their name implies, are water-based and require a receptive surface to achieve good wetting, dot formation, and adhesion. Sihl’s coating layer modifies the surface chemistry of the PE film to accept aqueous inkjet inks while maintaining the film’s inherent flexibility, conformability, and chemical resistance.
The coating must also survive the label converting process. Labels are typically printed in roll form, then die-cut, matrix-stripped, and wound back into rolls for application. The coating must resist abrasion during matrix stripping, maintain integrity through the die-cutting station, and not transfer to the adhesive side of the label when wound under tension. A coating that performs well in printing but fails during converting is commercially useless — and developing a coating that satisfies both sets of requirements on a flexible PE substrate represents a significant formulation challenge.
Sihl’s decision to include a BS5609-certified variant in the portfolio signals an awareness that industrial labels represent a distinct and growing market segment for aqueous inkjet. BS5609 certification requires the label to survive three months of immersion in seawater without significant degradation of print quality, legibility, or adhesion. This is a demanding standard, and the fact that Sihl can meet it with an aqueous-inkjet-compatible PE film suggests that the technology has matured beyond the proof-of-concept stage and is ready for demanding production environments. For chemical manufacturers, logistics providers, and maritime shippers who need durable, recyclable labels, the availability of a BS5609-certified, aqueous-inkjet-compatible PE material expands the range of applications that can move to mono-material label constructions.
