Is Screen Printing Really a Niche? Why the Old Technology Is Quietly Winning Industrial Work

Posters, stickers and advertising signs were once the undisputed territory of graphic screen printing. Today the technology is widely dismissed as a niche solution, a relic nudged aside by fast digital presses. A closer look tells a more interesting story: screen printing is not disappearing, it is migrating. It is experiencing a quiet resurgence in packaging, textile and industrial sectors where its physical advantages still beat anything inkjet can offer.

In the 1980s and 1990s screen printing was a primary method for large-format advertising, prized for colour brilliance, opacity and the ability to print on almost any material. For outdoor use it was long the gold standard for durability. But around the turn of the millennium the landscape shifted. Runs shrank, customers wanted jobs in days rather than weeks, and digital printing arrived with flexibility and speed that suited the new advertising world. Print buyers accepted that digital initially trailed screen on quality and outdoor life, and the volume began to move.

Digital printing improved enormously over twenty-five years, yet real limits remain. Many plastics, metals, glass and other non-absorbent substrates still cannot be printed with water- or solvent-based inks, and even UV inkjet sometimes needs pyrolysis pretreatment or a primer. Inkjet is constrained by the printheads it is built around, so only a few approved inks cover the whole range from paper to plastic, not always equally well. Layer thickness is the deeper issue: inkjet typically achieves only 8 to 15 micrometres, while screen printing reaches about 40 micrometres and, in specialised applications, up to 100. That gap is why modern screen printing has been rediscovered as a coating and production process, especially in printed electronics, where thick, precise deposits matter.

Market data frames the scale. Smithers analysis puts screen printing at only two to four per cent of the global packaging market, but anticipates annual growth of two to three per cent, projected mainly for screen as a coating technology. It applies barrier layers and base coats, and raised Braille labelling, to pharmaceutical and medical packaging, and is gaining ground in luxury packaging for tactile and special effects. In merchandise and T-shirt printing screen remains dominant with a 54.4 per cent share, and across fabric and apparel including industrial carousel and rotary screen, over 80 per cent of global volume is still screen printed. For runs under fifty pieces, though, screen faces pressure from DTF printing as personalisation grows.

The art and poster world tells a more melancholy tale. Screen printing is inseparable from twentieth-century poster art, from Warhol to Lichtenstein, and artists such as Shepard Fairey still rely on it. But commercial posters and flyers have largely moved to digital; one Swiss shop owner notes posters are simply less in demand now. Stickers, another classic application, have also shifted digital, pushing shops such as Matthes & Henze in Iserlohn to pivot toward membrane keyboards, front films and overlays, where industrial screen printing now makes up about half their revenue and keeps growing. That pivot from graphic to industrial is the defining move of the sector.

The workforce question looms. Many screen shops sprang up in 1950s and 1960s Europe, and while some are now in their third generation, others cannot find successors. New apprenticeship contracts for screen printing media technicians in Germany have stayed well below one hundred a year, though 2025 brought a welcome twelve per cent rise. Switzerland offers only a handful of trial apprenticeships for 2027. Even a trend-driven revival could be slowed by a shortage of skilled hands, a reminder that technology and talent do not always move together.

The talent mismatch could blunt even a strong technical case. Germany and Switzerland have trained generations of screen printers, yet apprenticeship numbers remain thin, and few young workers see the trade as a future. Shops that have successfully pivoted to industrial screen printing often pair deep craft with modern automation, but that combination is hard to staff. If demand for functional and electronic printing grows as predicted, the bottleneck may not be machines or markets but people, a familiar story across advanced manufacturing.

None of this makes screen printing obsolete; it makes it specialised. Where a job needs a thick functional layer, a difficult substrate or a tactile effect, screen remains the right tool, and digital handles the short, variable runs. The printers who thrive are those that treat the two as partners, using each for what it does best rather than forcing one to imitate the other. That pragmatic blend, not a winner-takes-all outcome, is the realistic future of graphic and industrial screen printing.

The pragmatic conclusion is that screen and digital are not rivals so much as complements with different sweet spots. Digital owns the short, variable, fast-turnaround run; screen owns the thick, functional, difficult-substrate application. Printers who master both, and who know which to deploy per job, position themselves for the full spectrum of demand. That duality, rather than the decline of either method, is the realistic shape of print’s next decade.
