Your Boxes Are About to Get More Expensive: Sappi Just Confirmed a November Price Hike

If you buy cartonboard, folding boxboard or any kind of paper-based packaging, circle 1 November on your calendar. That’s the day Sappi Europe’s prices go up — by €89 per tonne, about £75 — across its entire Paper Board portfolio.

It’s the kind of announcement that lands quietly in a press release and then ripples through every packaging quote in Europe for the rest of the year. Sappi’s wording is careful, almost weary: the increase is a response to “sustained cost pressures currently impacting the industry.” Translation? The maths of making board simply doesn’t work at current prices, and the company says it needs the adjustment to keep delivering “product quality, service excellence, and supply security.”

Here’s the thing printers and converters need to hear: Sappi isn’t apologising. It’s signalling that this is structural, not a one-off. The company points out it has already tried the usual levers — productivity drives, efficiency programmes, cost-cutting — and they weren’t enough. When a major supplier says “we cut costs and it still wasn’t enough,” you know the pressure is real and probably coming from somewhere beyond its control: energy, fibre, logistics, all the inputs that don’t show up on a pretty corporate slide.

This isn’t Sappi’s first move this year, either. Earlier in 2026 it lifted prices on mechanical coated reels, woodfree coated reels and speciality products. So what we’re seeing is a rolling adjustment across the board portfolio, not an isolated shock. If you’re a converter who sources from Sappi, expect your sales reps to be in touch, and expect the conversation to be “how do we protect your supply” rather than “can we hold the line.”

For print and packaging buyers, this is the moment to stop treating paper board as a static cost. Board is a globally traded commodity with its own supply-and-demand logic, and that logic is currently pointing up. Brands that locked in long-term pricing may be shielded for a while. Everyone else will feel it — first in margin erosion, then, if they’re smart, in a conversation with their own customers about revised pricing.

There’s a human side to this too. Every price increase like this is felt hardest by the smaller converters and packaging firms who don’t have the purchasing muscle to negotiate volume rebates. A €89 per tonne jump might be a rounding error for a multinational, but for a regional box maker running on thin margins, it can be the difference between a profitable quarter and a painful one. Those businesses will be the ones forced to pass costs on, scramble for alternative substrates, or quietly absorb the hit and hope volume makes up the difference.

What can a print buyer actually do? Three things. First, talk to your suppliers now, before the increase bites, and ask about forward-buying or fixing prices for a defined period. Second, revisit your substrate mix — there may be equivalent grades that aren’t moving as aggressively. Third, and this is the unpopular one, have the pricing conversation with your own customers early. Nothing destroys trust faster than a surprise surcharge landing on an invoice with no warning.

Sappi Europe is a division of Sappi Ltd, headquartered in Johannesburg and listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. It’s a heavyweight in the global fibre-based products market, which means its pricing moves tend to set the tone for competitors. When Sappi moves, others often follow — so treat this as the leading edge of a broader adjustment, not an isolated event.

The bigger story is one we keep telling in this industry: paper and board are no longer the cheap, abundant inputs they once were. Between energy volatility, sustainability-driven shifts in demand, and the steady consolidation of suppliers, pricing power has tilted toward the mills. Smart buyers build relationships, hedge where they can, and design packaging that uses less material without compromising performance. The firms that master that balancing act will absorb hits like this and keep moving. The ones that don’t will wonder why their margins disappeared.
