PRINTING United Alliance names Frank Tueckmantel Chief Branding and Engagement Officer

PRINTING United Alliance has appointed industry veteran Frank Tueckmantel as Chief Branding and Engagement Officer, a newly created executive role that places brand strategy, communications, audience engagement, digital experience and reputation under one enterprise-wide mandate. The move signals how seriously North America’s largest printing and graphic arts association now takes the unification of its many voices, and how much value it places on marketing discipline borrowed from the technology sector.

Ford Bowers, CEO of PRINTING United Alliance, said the organization has grown into “an unmatched platform of people, expertise, content, education, advocacy, media and events,” but that its impact depends on how clearly and consistently it brings that platform to market. Tueckmantel, Bowers argued, understands the industry and knows how to connect strategy with execution, making him the right person to “unite our voice, sharpen our market presence, and build deeper, more valuable relationships” with every audience served.

The appointment is a homecoming. Tueckmantel previously worked with NAPCO Media — now part of PRINTING United Alliance — as Executive Vice President of Business Development, a role announced in 2019 in which he developed an end-to-end customer engagement platform for trade-show participation. His return builds on an established familiarity with the organization, its audiences and its mission, reducing the onboarding lag that often blunts the impact of senior hires.

His resume spans more than 40 years across technology and visual communications. Most notably, as Vice President of Corporate Marketing at Electronics For Imaging (EFI), he led a worldwide marketing organization and a broad global portfolio covering trade shows, communications, brand strategy, demand generation and industry relations. He has also served on trade-show advisory boards and the drupa Committee of Messe Düsseldorf, shaping strategy for one of the world’s most influential print exhibitions — a network that bridges vendors, shows and associations.

Tueckmantel framed his mandate around human connection at scale. “The future of marketing is human connection at scale,” he said, describing the goal as bringing the right people together, creating experiences that matter and turning engagement into measurable value. He will provide strategic counsel to Bowers and the leadership team, set shared priorities and success metrics across brand and engagement functions, and align resources behind initiatives with the greatest potential to advance membership, event participation, audience reach and industry influence.

For members, the practical question is whether a strengthened brand and engagement function translates into more value: clearer education pathways, more relevant events, stronger advocacy and a more coherent voice for the industry in policy debates. Associations live or die on perceived relevance, and a unified brand is harder to ignore in a crowded media landscape where attention is the scarce resource.

The appointment also reflects a maturing industry structure. As print consolidates and diversifies simultaneously, the associations that represent it are professionalizing their own operations. If the bet pays off, the Alliance’s many programs will speak with one voice — and that voice will be easier for members and prospects to hear, and harder for policymakers to overlook when printing’s interests are on the table.

This development arrives as the global printing and packaging industry navigates a period of simultaneous consolidation and specialization, where the ability to add a credible new capability — whether a sustainable substrate, a productivity tool or a diversified technology — increasingly separates the shops and suppliers that grow from those that merely hold market share. The companies and associations moving decisively now are positioning themselves to capture demand that will only intensify as regulations tighten and customers professionalize their own supply chains. For smaller players in particular, the lesson is that resilience comes less from scale alone than from the willingness to adopt proven technology and to communicate value clearly to a market that is rapidly professionalizing around them.

Looking ahead, the practical implication for print service providers and converters is that incremental improvement is no longer sufficient; the market rewards those who treat capability, sustainability and workflow as connected investments rather than separate line items. Whether the trigger is a new material, a new press or a new software layer, the winners tend to be the organizations that integrate the change into how they sell, produce and account for work. That integration is precisely what turns a headline announcement into durable competitive advantage, and it is why trade coverage of individual product launches is most useful when read as a signal of where the whole industry is heading next.

None of this happens in isolation. The suppliers, converters and associations making headlines this season are part of a single, interlocking shift toward higher-value, lower-waste, better-connected production. Capital is flowing to the assets — presses, films, curing systems, software and people — that let a business say yes to more kinds of work without proportionally expanding its cost base. For an industry long defined by thin margins and cyclical demand, that ability to flex is the clearest path to stability, and it explains why so much of the current news cycle is about capability and capacity rather than pure volume.
