Think Ink Acquires Kirk-Rudy Assets, Forms KR Engineering in Georgia

Think Ink, a sister company of industrial inkjet specialist MCS, has acquired the assets of print, mail, packaging and RFID equipment manufacturer Kirk-Rudy. The new operation will be known as KR Engineering, a division of Think Ink, and will operate from Kirk-Rudy’s existing 9,290-square-metre facility in Woodstock, Georgia.

The deal extends Think Ink’s geographic footprint. The company will continue its operations in Maryland, Chicago and Florida, and now adds Georgia to its map. For Kirk-Rudy, a recognised name in specialist mailing and finishing equipment, the transaction secures continuity for its products, employees and dealer network under new ownership.

Kirk-Rudy was founded in 1967 by Harry Kirk and Fred Rudy in Libertyville, Illinois. The company moved to Georgia in 1971 and into its Woodstock manufacturing facility in 2002. Over more than five decades it built a reputation for specialist mailing equipment covering feeding, addressing, transporting, inserting, tabbing and more – the mechanical backbone of high-volume print and mail operations.

David Loos, president of Think Ink, will work directly with KR Engineering employees during the transition. His stated emphasis is on supporting the team, maintaining customer and dealer relationships, and preparing the business for the future. That hands-on approach signals continuity rather than disruption, important for a customer base that depends on mission-critical inserting and addressing lines.

For Think Ink and parent MCS, the acquisition deepens capabilities in the print-and-mail automation space. MCS is known for industrial inkjet, and combining that expertise with Kirk-Rudy’s mechanical feeding and inserting heritage creates a broader portfolio for transactional, transpromo and direct-mail producers. As mailers seek to integrate inkjet personalisation with reliable material handling, a single source for both becomes attractive.

The Woodstock facility, at roughly 100,000 square feet, provides ample space for engineering, manufacturing and support. Keeping the operation in place preserves institutional knowledge and minimises disruption to supply chains for spare parts and service.

Industry observers will watch how KR Engineering positions itself against other mailing and finishing suppliers. The recurring theme in print equipment M&A is consolidation that pairs digital printheads with mechanical handling – exactly the combination this deal represents. For printers running high-volume statements, bills and promotional mail, the integration of inkjet and inserting under one roof can simplify procurement and support.

The transaction also reflects a wider trend: established equipment brands with deep engineering legacies being absorbed by younger, software- and inkjet-driven companies. The result can be revitalised product roadmaps, provided the acquirer respects the legacy engineering and customer trust that built the brand.

For now, the message from both sides is stability. Kirk-Rudy’s products continue, its people stay employed in Woodstock, and its dealers retain a channel. Under the KR Engineering banner, the Kirk-Rudy name enters a new chapter with the backing of Think Ink and MCS.

Article based on reporting from PrintCAN.

Kirk-Rudy’s product heritage is deeply rooted in the mechanics of mail. Its feeding, addressing, transporting, inserting and tabbing equipment underpin some of the highest-volume transactional and promotional mail operations in North America. That installed base is a durable asset: mission-critical lines that customers cannot easily replace, and that generate ongoing service and parts revenue. Preserving it was presumably central to the transaction.

For Think Ink and MCS, the logic is strategic as well as financial. MCS built its name on industrial inkjet, particularly for variable data and personalisation in mail and packaging. Pairing that with Kirk-Rudy’s material-handling and inserting muscle creates a vertically coherent offering: print personalisation and physical insertion from a single, accountable source. In an era when mailers want to integrate inkjet colour and intelligent insertion without juggling multiple vendors, that combination is compelling.

The Woodstock facility’s size – roughly 100,000 square feet – provides room to engineer, manufacture and support the combined portfolio. Keeping operations in place protects the tacit knowledge embedded in Kirk-Rudy’s workforce, the kind of expertise that cannot be quickly rebuilt elsewhere. If KR Engineering invests in modernising the product line while honouring its reputation for robust mechanical engineering, the brand could enjoy a second chapter stronger than the first.

The deal also reflects how the mailing equipment sector is consolidating around digital print leadership. As transactional mail becomes more personalised and data-driven, the mechanical inserting heritage of Kirk-Rudy and the inkjet heritage of MCS are natural complements. If KR Engineering invests in bridging those worlds – intelligent inserting driven by inkjet-addressed, variable content – it could redefine the modern mail line. For now, the priority is continuity: keep the Woodstock operation stable, retain the engineering team, and reassure dealers that the Kirk-Rudy name endures under new ownership.

Ultimately, the transaction is a vote of confidence in electromechanical mailing engineering at a moment when much of the industry’s attention is pulled toward pure digital. Kirk-Rudy’s decades of mechanical expertise remains indispensable wherever physical inserting, feeding and addressing must run reliably at volume. By anchoring that capability inside the Think Ink and MCS ecosystem, the deal ensures the analogue backbone of mail continues to evolve alongside the inkjet future rather than being left behind.
