International Paper Adds Sustainability and Operations Expertise to Board

International Paper has appointed Katherine Collins and Lori J. Ryerkerk to its Board of Directors, effective October 1, 2026. The appointments coincide with the planned year-end retirement of current directors Dr. Kathryn Sullivan and Ahmet C. Dorduncu, marking a notable transition in the governance of one of the world’s largest paper and packaging companies.

Collins Brings Sustainable Finance and Governance Experience

Katherine Collins joins the board with more than 30 years of experience in investment management, sustainable finance, corporate governance, and nonprofit leadership. She previously established and led the sustainable investing platform at Putnam Investments and held senior research and portfolio management positions at Fidelity Investments. Her background reflects the growing importance of environmental, social, and governance considerations in capital allocation and corporate strategy.

For International Paper, Collins’ appointment signals a continued focus on sustainability as a board-level priority. The company operates in an industry under intense scrutiny regarding forest management, recycling, emissions, and circular economy practices. Having a director with deep sustainable finance expertise can help the company navigate investor expectations, regulatory developments, and long-term resource strategy.

Ryerkerk Adds Industrial Operations and Transformation Leadership

Lori J. Ryerkerk brings more than four decades of experience in the energy, chemicals, and specialty materials industries. She most recently served as Chairman, President, and CEO of Celanese Corporation, where she oversaw global manufacturing operations, large-scale acquisitions, operational excellence initiatives, and sustainability programs. She also serves on the boards of several major industrial companies.

Ryerkerk’s operational background is particularly relevant to International Paper, which runs one of the most capital-intensive manufacturing networks in the packaging sector. Her experience with complex supply chains, asset optimization, and transformational change can support the company’s efforts to improve efficiency and adapt to shifting demand patterns.

A Statement From Leadership

International Paper Chairman and CEO Andy Silvernail said both appointees bring exceptional leadership experience and a proven ability to guide organizations through complexity and change. “Lori brings deep operational expertise and public company leadership experience, while Katherine brings a distinguished investment background and thoughtful governance perspective,” he said. Silvernail also thanked the retiring directors for their service.

The board changes come as International Paper continues a broader transformation aimed at strengthening its competitive position in paper and packaging markets. With new voices in the boardroom, the company is positioning itself to balance short-term performance with long-term resilience in an industry facing structural change.
