Hybrid Software has released Packz 12, the latest version of its PDF editor for packaging prepress, introducing two capabilities that address converging pressures in the packaging supply chain: an AI-powered assistant that helps users navigate complex prepress workflows, and support for Amazon Transparency codes that enable product serialization and authentication. The release signals a shift in prepress software from pure editing tools toward intelligent workflow platforms that connect design, compliance, and production.

AI Assistant: Context-Aware Guidance for Prepress Teams

The multilingual AI assistant provides context-aware guidance for Packz tools and workflows, giving new users quick access to relevant information and step-by-step assistance for routine tasks. Beyond simple help functions, the assistant can generate Packz Action Lists, dynamic information panels, print marks, and scripting code — helping prepress teams automate routine processes and develop custom workflows more quickly than manual configuration would allow.

Pascal Wybo, product manager for Packz, described the release as marking a new era where artificial intelligence becomes an integral part of the modern prepress workflow. “We see AI as a way to remove barriers between users and the software, making advanced capabilities easier to discover, easier to learn, and easier to automate routine tasks,” Wybo said. The framing is significant: rather than positioning AI as a replacement for human expertise, Hybrid Software treats it as an interface simplifier that reduces the learning curve for complex prepress operations.

For packaging converters, this approach addresses a persistent workforce challenge. Prepress operators must master intricate software tools while also understanding substrate behaviour, colour management, trapping rules, and regulatory requirements. Packz 12’s support for Amazon Transparency Codes connects prepress directly to the emerging product authentication infrastructure that major retailers are mandating. Through its advanced barcode and variable data printing capabilities, Packz can now generate the serialized codes that Amazon requires for product verification — linking prepress artwork to the supply chain authentication layer.

Together with Hybrid Software’s Artflow artwork management software and CloudFlow enterprise software, Packz forms an end-to-end workflow spanning code retrieval, artwork approval, barcode generation, and print production. This integrated approach eliminates the manual handoffs that typically occur between artwork management, code generation, and prepress production — reducing errors, accelerating cycle times, and ensuring that serialized codes appear correctly on finished packaging.

Enhanced Packz Max quality control simplifies inspection of object-based screening on transparent artwork, addressing a specific technical challenge where traditional inspection methods struggle to evaluate halftone quality on substrates that lack a solid white background. Support for Hell Gravure JobTickets strengthens connectivity between prepress and engraving, improving the data flow for gravure cylinder production where accurate file transfer directly affects engraving quality and cylinder turnaround time.

The Competitive Context in Packaging Prepress Software

Packz 12’s release positions Hybrid Software against competitors including Esko’s ArtPro+ and Adobe Illustrator-based workflows that many converters still use for packaging prepress. The AI assistant differentiates Packz by reducing the expertise threshold required for complex operations — a practical advantage in a market where experienced prepress operators are increasingly difficult to recruit and retain.
