Domino Launches Ax560i CIJ Printer to Tackle Labor Shortages and Unplanned Downtime

Domino Printing Sciences has launched the Ax560i, the latest addition to its x-generation coding and marking portfolio, purpose-built to help manufacturers keep production lines running despite two of the industry’s most stubborn problems: labor shortages and unplanned downtime. As operator turnover rises and skilled staff grow harder to find, the case for coding equipment that performs consistently regardless of who is on shift has rarely been stronger.

The Ax560i is built around three deceptively simple principles: predict, prevent, perform. Predictive maintenance features sit at the core, including integrated component-level monitoring, predictive cleaning guidance, cloud dashboards for real-time printer-health insight, and remote accessibility that lets Domino’s service teams resolve issues without an on-site visit. That remote capability dovetails with Domino’s SafeGuard service offering, turning what used to be a truck-roll into a quick digital intervention.

For prevention, the printer carries an advanced CleanAssist cleaning system, nozzle-face sealing technology for reliable start-ups after planned shutdowns, and an integrated air-drying system that protects the printhead in moist or damp conditions. It can be paired with Domino Designer for centralized message management, or with Domino’s coding automation and vision systems as part of a fully integrated line. The goal is to stop coding and labeling errors before they ever reach a product.

On the operator side, Domino has redesigned the printhead to simplify maintenance and introduced the QuickStep 3 interface plus new operator wizards for guided support. CleanAssist also reduces solvent exposure and consumables usage, a welcome win for both safety and cost. Smart-factory integration comes via Ethernet/IP and OPC-UA protocols, alongside Domino’s Dynamark protocol for consistent coding across multiple lines and sites.

Phil Parkins, senior product manager for CIJ at Domino, framed the launch as a direct response to customer pain. “Our customers are under increasing pressure to do more with less, balancing growing production demands with labor shortages, high operator turnover, and the cost of unplanned downtime,” he said. The Ax560i, he added, helps manufacturers identify potential issues before they cause stoppages, supporting consistent coding performance and reducing dependence on specialist operators.

Tom Woodford, head of inkjet at Domino, positioned the machine within a broader coding ecosystem. “When combined with Domino’s automated coding and verification systems, the Ax560i forms part of a complete coding ecosystem that helps our customers to predict issues, prevent errors, and have confidence that their lines will keep running reliably, shift after shift,” he said. The phrasing underscores a shift in how coding is sold: not as a standalone box, but as a reliability strategy.

The broader context matters. Continuous inkjet (CIJ) remains the workhorse of fast, variable coding on everything from beverage cans to pharmaceutical cartons, but its reputation has suffered when poorly maintained units drift out of spec. By embedding diagnostic intelligence and cloud visibility, Domino is betting that the next generation of CIJ buyers will prioritize uptime and ease of use over raw speed alone.

For converters and brand owners, the implications are practical. Fewer specialist operators needed per line means more flexible staffing. Cloud dashboards mean plant managers can see printer health across sites from a single pane. And remote resolution shortens the mean time to repair, a metric that directly protects throughput.

The Ax560i also reflects a wider industry theme: the migration of industrial printing toward servitization, where the vendor’s value extends well beyond the hardware into monitoring, consumables and support. For Domino, a company with deep heritage in coding, the x-generation roadmap is clearly about wrapping robust inkjet mechanics in software that makes them foolproof.

As manufacturing continues to grapple with workforce gaps, equipment that lowers the skill floor without sacrificing quality will command a premium. The Ax560i is Domino’s answer to that brief, and a sign that predictive, connected coding is moving from nice-to-have to baseline expectation on modern production floors.

The launch also arrives at a moment when supply-chain resilience is top of mind for manufacturers. A coding failure on a high-speed line can halt an entire shift, and the cost of that downtime often dwarfs the price of the printer itself. By surfacing printer health in the cloud, Domino lets maintenance teams intervene before a fault cascades into lost output, a capability that pays for itself quickly in continuous-production environments.

Crucially, the Ax560i embodies a design philosophy that treats the operator as a variable to be insulated rather than a constant to be relied upon. In markets where experienced coding technicians are scarce, that philosophy is not a luxury but a prerequisite for adoption. The inclusion of OPC-UA and Ethernet/IP also future-proofs the device against the coming wave of smart-factory mandates from large brand owners.

For Domino, the move reinforces its transition from a hardware vendor to a reliability partner. The SafeGuard service, paired with remote diagnostics, means the relationship continues long after installation. That recurring, software-enabled value is where industrial-printing margins are increasingly won, and the Ax560i is a clear expression of that strategy.
