Color-Logic certifies ColorByte ImagePrint UV RIP for simpler metallic embellishment

Color-Logic has certified ColorByte’s ImagePrint UV RIP for use with its metallic colour system, following testing on a Fluid Color UV inkjet printer. The certification process used the official Color-Logic test form printed with white plus CMYK inks on metallic media and confirmed that the system correctly reproduced Color-Logic metallic colours, decorative effects and embellishments. The result gives print service providers using compatible UV inkjet equipment a validated path for producing specialty metallic applications.

Certification matters in embellishment because metallic work is unforgiving. Unlike standard four-colour printing, specialty metallic production depends on precise white-ink management and consistent registration to achieve the reflective, decorative effects customers expect. A certified combination removes guesswork: the printer knows the RIP, media and ink interaction has been verified to deliver the intended look, which reduces costly trial-and-error and rejected jobs.

ColorByte integrated a dedicated Color-Logic interface directly into ImagePrint UV, simplifying what can otherwise be a more involved setup process for specialty files. Instead of manually configuring the RIP or performing additional setup procedures, operators can bring a supplied Color-Logic PDF into the workflow and send it to production. The integration is intended to make embellishment production more repeatable while reducing the level of specialized operator knowledge required to prepare jobs — a meaningful advantage given the industry’s chronic skills shortages.

White-ink linearization is another critical part of the certified workflow. When printing on metallic substrates, the amount of white ink controls how much of the reflective surface remains visible through the printed image, making accurate white management essential to the intended metallic appearance. ImagePrint UV’s linearization capabilities control that white layer across the tonal range, helping maintain predictable metallic colours and effects. Get the white wrong and the entire effect flattens or overwhelms; get it right and the substrate’s reflectivity becomes a design element rather than a problem.

For printers looking to expand premium applications, the certification combines Color-Logic’s embellishment system with a RIP workflow designed to make metallic production easier to implement and more consistent in day-to-day operation. Premium embellishment — foil-like effects, decorative patterns, brand accents — commands higher margins than commodity printing, and the ability to deliver it reliably is a competitive differentiator in labels, packaging, awards and promotional graphics.

The UV inkjet context is important. UV curing allows metallic media and specialty substrates to be decorated without the heat and absorption issues of solvent or aqueous processes, widening the range of materials a shop can address. Pairing that flexibility with a certified, interface-driven workflow lowers the barrier for shops entering embellishment for the first time.

Ultimately, this certification is a small but telling example of the print industry’s maturation: suppliers are not just selling components but qualifying entire workflows so that customers can produce sophisticated effects without becoming specialists themselves. That trend — verified, integrated, operator-friendly systems — is what makes high-margin applications accessible to a broader base of print businesses.

The white-ink management story is the technical heart of this certification. On metallic substrates, white is not just a colour — it is the control layer that governs how much reflective base shows through, and therefore the entire character of the metallic effect. Getting it wrong wastes expensive media and disappoints clients; getting it right, repeatably, is what turns embellishment into a reliable profit centre.

For shops, the certified RIP interface also lowers training burden. A new operator can produce a verified metallic job by loading a supplied PDF and sending it, without deep expertise in colour layering. That accessibility is what lets smaller print businesses compete for premium work that previously required a specialist, and it broadens the market for Color-Logic’s system at the same time.

The certification also reflects a broader market shift toward UV inkjet as the default platform for specialty and embellishment work. UV curing handles the metallic and rigid substrates that solvent or aqueous processes struggle with, and the ability to lay down precise white and CMYK layers in one pass makes complex decorative effects practical at shorter runs. A certified, interface-driven workflow simply removes the last operational friction from adopting that capability.

For print businesses, the commercial logic is straightforward: embellishment commands premium pricing and is less exposed to commoditization than plain four-colour work. By lowering the skill and setup barrier, certifications like this let more shops compete for that premium, turning a previously specialist service into a broadly accessible revenue line. That expansion of the addressable market is good for the whole ecosystem, from substrate makers to finishing vendors.

Looking further out, certifications like this accelerate the migration of embellishment from analogue foil stamping to digital production. Brands want shelf differentiation without the cost, setup and sustainability drawbacks of physical foil, and a validated digital path meets that need at shorter runs and higher personalization. Certified shops are positioned to capture the shift as it accelerates.

For converters, the strategic move is to treat certified workflows as a moat. A tested RIP-and-ink combination delivers certainty that piecemeal experimentation cannot, and it lets a shop bring premium metallic work to market faster and more consistently. In a market where high-margin embellishment is a rare defence against commoditization, that operational advantage is worth prioritizing explicitly in capability planning.
