ChromaQA 7.5 expands colour standards, measurement and reporting for printers and brands

datacolor TECHKON has released ChromaQA 7.5, a substantial update that delivers 18 enhancements aimed at simplifying colour quality workflows for printers and brands. The release tightens the link between measurement, standards and reporting, areas where print operations increasingly need audit-ready evidence of colour consistency as brand owners tighten specifications.

Among the headline additions, ChromaQA 7.5 lets users specify measurement locations directly within uploaded PDF or JPG artwork. That capability removes ambiguity about where on a printed sheet a reading should be taken, a frequent source of disagreement between a brand’s specification and a printer’s quality check. The software can also import CIELab values and TVI curves from ICC v2 and v4 profiles, create customised drawdown reports, measure substrate opacity, and build multiple ScoreCards for different in-house, GMI, or brand-specific requirements.

The update broadens support for PantoneLIVE illuminant and observer settings, Colibri colourant sets in SmartINK, SpectroCheck calibration reporting, individual colour deltaE tolerances, and master templates in Chroma Spec. SmartINK corrections can now be rounded to quarter-cup increments with recalculated predicted deltaE values, while Chroma Standards gains improved colour book sorting and more flexible tolerance controls. Each change targets a specific pain point encountered on real press floors.

For printers, the practical value is reduced friction. Colour approval has historically been a bottleneck, with manual interpretation of tolerances and inconsistent sampling points slowing jobs and generating costly reprints. By embedding measurement guidance into the artwork file itself and harmonising tolerances across multiple brand books, ChromaQA 7.5 reduces the back-and-forth that eats into press time. For brand owners, the ability to define several ScoreCards means a single quality platform can serve diverse supplier networks, each with its own specifications, without maintaining separate tools.

GMI, the Gemini Marie International print-quality programme used by many major retailers, is explicitly referenced in the release, underscoring how colour management software is being shaped by the compliance demands of large brand owners. As retailers tighten packaging specifications, converters that can demonstrate conformance automatically are at a distinct advantage when tenders are awarded. A failed colour check can mean a hold at the dock; automated, standardised evidence turns that risk into routine paperwork.

The convergence of measurement hardware and software continues to accelerate. TECHKON’s spectrophotometers paired with datacolor’s ChromaQA suite represent the kind of integrated offering that print operations increasingly prefer: one ecosystem rather than a patchwork of handheld gauges, spreadsheets and email approvals. The quarter-cup rounding in SmartINK also reflects a real-world concern, ink room corrections must be usable on the press, not just mathematically elegant in a lab.

Colour remains one of the most visible quality signals in print and packaging. A carton that matches the brand’s signature shade builds recognition; one that drifts erodes trust on the shelf. Tools like ChromaQA 7.5, by making colour data structured, comparable and reportable, help the industry move from subjective judgement toward quantified, repeatable control, an essential step as production spreads across multiple sites and suppliers. For an industry where a few deltaE units can separate a premium result from a reject, that discipline is becoming non-negotiable.

The commercial logic for tighter colour control is compelling. Every colour dispute between a brand and a printer carries a cost: wasted press time, reprinted stock, delayed launches and strained relationships. By moving measurement locations, tolerances and reports into a single governed system, ChromaQA 7.5 reduces the ambiguity that fuels those disputes. For a converter running dozens of brand specifications, that discipline translates directly into fewer stops and higher first-pass yield.

The emphasis on GMI and brand-specific ScoreCards also reflects how concentrated print buying has become. Large retailers and consumer brands now dictate exacting colour programmes, and only suppliers that can evidence conformance win and keep the work. Software that speaks those programmes natively, rather than forcing manual workarounds, becomes a competitive gate rather than a convenience.

Underpinning all of this is a broader industry shift toward centralised colour. As production fragments across sites, regions and even contract printers, the only way to guarantee consistency is to standardise the measurement and the meaning of the numbers. ChromaQA 7.5’s support for PantoneLIVE, ICC profiles and master templates is best understood in that context: it is infrastructure for a world where colour must be identical whether produced in one plant or ten, and where the proof of that consistency must be available on demand.

In practice, the update helps close the gap between brand expectation and press reality. A colour that looks right on a calibrated monitor can drift once it meets a specific substrate, ink and press condition, and without a governed measurement workflow those drift points become arguments. ChromaQA 7.5’s ability to pin measurement locations to the artwork and to generate brand-specific ScoreCards means the same job can be judged against the same yardstick every time, wherever it is produced. That repeatability is the quiet engine behind consistent shelf presence.
