Techkon USA, a specialist in color measurement instruments and software, and Wikoff Color Corporation, a major ink and coatings manufacturer, have announced a strategic partnership that reaches across the entire workflow, from the ink kitchen to the pressroom.
Under the agreement, Wikoff will deploy Techkon color measurement instruments and software inside its own operations to support production quality control, ink toning, and color matching. Just as important, Wikoff will now be able to put Techkon measurement hardware and software into customers’ hands, backed by implementation, application, and technical support. The aim is to improve color communication across the whole value chain so production teams win faster approvals, more repeatable brand colors, and greater pressroom efficiency.
Why does this matter? Because color tolerance is tightening everywhere. Brand owners expect the same red, the same blue, the same metallic accent whether a job runs on a flexo press in one plant or an offset press in another, months apart. Variations that a shop floor once waved through now trigger rejections, makeready waste, and costly re-runs. Every extra proof cycle burns substrate, energy, and time, and every off-color shipment risks a customer relationship.
The partnership attacks the problem at its source. Traditionally, color data lived in silos: the ink supplier measured in one place, the converter measured in another, and the brand measured a third. When those measurements used different instruments or inconsistent methods, disagreements were almost inevitable. By putting a single, shared measurement technology and software layer across both Wikoff’s production and its customers’ pressrooms, the two companies want to make the conversation about color quantitative rather than subjective.
Wikoff brings deep expertise in inks, coatings, and print applications. Techkon brings the spectrophotometers, densitometers, and software that turn color into precise, comparable numbers. Together, they argue, accurate color information can move earlier in the process, during ink manufacturing itself, so that less correction is needed later at the press. Faster, more reliable toning means shorter makeready, fewer scraps, and a more predictable result for converters running demanding brand specifications.
The collaboration is also a response to where the workforce is headed. As experienced press operators retire and shorter runs multiply, shops need tools that reduce reliance on individual craft judgment and instead bake consistency into the process. Modern interfaces, clear setup data, and trustworthy measurement let a broader team hit the same target reliably. That is exactly the kind of capability finishers need to protect margins as labor tightens.
For printers and converters, the practical upside is concrete: fewer disputes over whether a color is “right,” quicker sign-off from brand owners, and less material thrown away chasing a match.
