Smart labels are easy to design and hard to ship. An RFID inlay that fails in the field is worse than no inlay at all, because the retailer’s scanner has already made its decision by the time the problem is discovered. The industry’s answer has traditionally been a collection of separate machines: one station to inspect print quality, another to test RFID functionality, a third to verify codes. Rosas Maschinenbau, a German specialist in label inspection and finishing, has concluded that the answer belongs on a single tabletop. The company will present the Leopard 300 at Loupe Americas 2026 in Chicago, a complete RFID inspection platform now extended with an integrated code verifier to create what it calls a comprehensive RFID quality control technology.
The Leopard 300 combines the Erhardt and Leimer Smartscan 200 percent inspection system with CISC RAIN Xplorer RFID testing technology. The marriage of the two technologies is the core of the product’s appeal: in a single pass, a converter can inspect optical quality, verify that every RFID tag actually works, encode RFID data linked to QR codes or barcodes, process and verify variable data, and automatically identify and remove defective tags through re-inspection. For a label converter producing smart labels for retail, logistics or pharmaceutical applications, the alternative is a patchwork of systems and manual checks that is slow, error-prone and expensive. The Leopard 300 collapses that workflow into one machine and one operator.
The 200 percent inspection claim deserves attention. Inspection systems typically look at a web once; 200 percent inspection means the system examines the print quality at higher resolution or through a more demanding algorithm, effectively catching defects that a standard pass would miss. For RFID labels, the stakes are higher than for conventional labels because the failure mode is invisible: a tag can look perfect and still be dead. The CISC RAIN Xplorer testing technology addresses that by verifying the electrical performance of each inlay, reading its identifier, and confirming it responds correctly, all at production speed. That combination of optical and electrical verification is what makes the system a quality control platform rather than just another inspection camera.
The integrated code verifier adds another layer of capability. Modern smart labels increasingly combine RFID with QR codes or barcodes, and the two must be linked correctly for the label to function in an omni-channel world. The Leopard 300 can encode RFID data that corresponds to the printed code, then verify that the encoded data matches what was printed, closing the loop that separate systems leave open. For pharmaceutical and healthcare applications, where a mislabeled product can have serious consequences, that verification is not a luxury; it is a requirement.
Rosas will also show the Viper 750 rewinder at Loupe Americas, first introduced at Labelexpo Europe 2025. The Viper 750 features Rosas’s Infinity 4K inspection system and web speeds of up to 750 m/min, positioning it for high-performance inspection and rewinding in demanding label and packaging production environments. While the Leopard 300 targets the specific challenge of RFID quality control, the Viper 750 addresses the broader need for high-speed, high-resolution inspection in mainstream label production. Together, the two machines give converters a clear path from basic inspection to advanced smart-label quality assurance.

The launch of the Leopard 300 comes at a moment when the smart label market is accelerating. Retailers are demanding item-level RFID to fight shrinkage and manage inventory, pharmaceutical companies are adopting serialization to comply with track-and-trace regulations, and luxury brands are exploring RFID as a means of authentication. Each of those applications depends on the same thing: tags that work, consistently, at scale, every time. The Leopard 300’s contribution is to make that reliability economically achievable, by turning RFID quality control from a manual, multi-machine process into a single, automated step that runs at production speed. The company’s willingness to combine technologies from multiple suppliers, Erhardt and Leimer’s inspection expertise and CISC’s RFID testing, into one integrated platform is itself a statement about the direction of the industry, where collaboration across specialist vendors increasingly replaces single-vendor lock-in. As Loupe Americas opens in Chicago, converters evaluating the smart label opportunity will find that the equipment needed to do it right has just become a lot more accessible.
