Ravenwood’s New Calculator Proves Linerless Labels Clear Europe’s Toughest Green Bar

Ravenwood Packaging has launched an online Silicone Weight Calculator that lets label converters and brand owners quantify the silicone content of linerless labels as a percentage of total label weight, producing hard data for PPWR and EPR compliance assessments at a moment when regulators are tightening the rules around packaging waste.

The calculator takes label dimensions, material weight and the number of silicone lines, then works out the actual silicone weight on an individual label. In a worked example, a 64.77 mm linerless label weighing 3.69 g, with three 16 mm silicone lines and a coating weight of 1.5 gsm, yields a silicone content of 0.00466 g — equivalent to 0.126 percent of total label weight. That figure sits comfortably below the 0.3 percent threshold for a green classification under the relevant RAM methodology, the kind of number that compliance teams need in writing rather than as a vendor’s reassurance.

Ravenwood says its traditional wraparound linerless formats — including the C, D, slideable and full-wrap variants — all achieve a green classification when run through the calculator. The tool joins the company’s existing CO2 Savings Calculator, which compares the potential CO2 savings of linerless labels against those of self-adhesive alternatives. Together, the two calculators turn sustainability claims into figures a brand can defend.

“We wanted to take the uncertainty out of the calculation and give the industry a practical tool that can be used to assess our sustainable labels,” said Dan Coe, director of Ravenwood Packaging. “The results demonstrate that the silicone release coating used in our linerless formats represents a very small proportion of the overall label weight.” The point is not merely technical pride but commercial necessity: as the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) raises the bar, converters and brand owners need evidence, not assertions.

Linerless labels have long promised sustainability gains by eliminating the release liner — the backing paper that is peeled off and discarded in conventional self-adhesive labelling. Removing that liner cuts waste at the source and reduces the material and transport footprint of labelling operations. But the silicone release coating that remains on linerless formats has drawn scrutiny, because any coating still counts against environmental thresholds. Ravenwood’s calculator is an answer to that scrutiny: show, with arithmetic, that the residual silicone is negligible.

For label converters, the calculator is a selling aid as much as a compliance tool. A converter pitching linerless to a brand under pressure to hit PPWR targets can now hand over a per-label calculation rather than a generic brochure claim. That matters because procurement and sustainability teams increasingly require documented evidence that a switch to linerless actually moves the needle. The 0.3 percent green threshold is the line in the sand, and Ravenwood is demonstrating its formats sit well on the safe side of it.

The broader context is a packaging industry under sustained regulatory and consumer pressure to cut waste. PPWR, with its reuse, recyclability and recycled-content targets, is reshaping how every component of a pack is judged, right down to the label. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes likewise make brands accountable for the end-of-life footprint of what they put on shelves. In that environment, a label that can be shown to be both liner-free and silicone-light is a genuinely useful selling point.

Ravenwood’s move also reflects a maturing market for linerless technology. What began as a niche, sustainability-led format is now being buttressed with the kind of measurement and verification infrastructure that mainstream adoption requires. Tools like the Silicone Weight Calculator lower the barrier for cautious brands by removing the guesswork and giving them defensible numbers to take to auditors and internal stakeholders.

Whether linerless becomes a default rather than an option will depend on application fit, application machinery and cost. But by putting a transparent calculator in front of the industry, Ravenwood has removed one common objection — that the environmental benefit is asserted rather than measured. In a regulatory landscape where the burden of proof sits with the producer, that is a meaningful piece of groundwork.

The calculator also arrives as linerless itself moves from curiosity to mainstream consideration. Early linerless adoption was slowed by application machinery, converter familiarity and questions about whether the environmental claims would survive regulatory scrutiny. By publishing a transparent, arithmetic tool, Ravenwood is trying to pre-empt the hardest objection — that “green” labels are greenwashing. Independent converters can run their own formats through the same calculator, which builds trust in the method rather than just the vendor’s word. Industry observers note that PPWR is forcing exactly this kind of evidence-based compliance across the whole pack, from substrate to ink to label. Tools that quantify sustainability performance are likely to multiply as the regulation bites. For Ravenwood, being first with a credible silicone calculator is both a marketing edge and a way to shape how the industry measures linerless sustainability in the first place.
