Circular plastic just got a major vote of confidence
The dream of truly circular plastic — bottles and textiles that become virgin-quality material again and again — has spent years stuck between promising pilots and commercial reality. This week, that gap got a little smaller, and it happened in India.
Ester Industries, an Indian maker of polyester films and specialty polymers, announced that its joint-venture partner, Loop Industries, signed a non-binding letter of intent with a global sports and athletic brand. Under a multi-year framework, the brand intends to buy up to 15,000 metric tons of Loop PET Fiber Grade resin annually. The resin will come from a new manufacturing facility in India operated by ELITe (Ester Loop Infinite Technologies), the 50:50 joint venture between Ester and Loop.
Why this is a bigger deal than it sounds
Fifteen thousand tonnes a year is not a rounding error. It is a serious, committed offtake — and it comes on the heels of an earlier agreement with Nike. With this new LOI, a substantial portion of the planned annual capacity at the upcoming India facility is now covered by commitments from global sports brands, well before the plant even starts commercial operation.
Arvind Singhania, chairman of Ester Industries, made the strategic point plainly: “With Nike already on board as our anchor customer, this second commitment from a sports brand reaffirms the strong market demand for circular, textile-to-textile recycled polyester, and further validates ELITe’s strategic position in accelerating sustainable manufacturing globally.”
The technology behind the promise
The ELITe facility is expected to come online in 2028. It will use Loop’s proprietary depolymerization technology to convert 100 percent textile polyester waste streams into virgin-quality monomers — DMT and MEG — which are then polymerized back into polyester resin. In plain language: old polyester clothes and fabric become brand-new resin without drilling for oil.
Early resin testing and feedstock validation have already produced positive preliminary results, paving the way for full material qualification and long-term supply-chain integration with global brand partners.

Daniel Solomita, founder and CEO of Loop Industries, framed it as validation of the technology at scale: “This agreement is a strong validation of our technology’s ability to deliver virgin-quality, sustainable resin at commercial scale. As we move ELITe towards operations in 2028, growing interest from global brands reinforces the demand we’re seeing for infinitely recyclable PET.”
The shared vision is clear: scale circular textile manufacturing, reduce dependence on virgin fossil-fuel-based polyester, and build low-carbon supply chains across global markets.
Why sports brands, why India, why now
Sports and athletic apparel is one of the largest consumers of polyester in the world. If those brands can source circular resin at commercial scale, the environmental math changes dramatically. And India — with its manufacturing ambition, growing textiles sector, and improving engineering ecosystem — is becoming a serious node in that supply chain.
The project’s momentum is real. Land acquisition is expected to wrap up within two to three months. After Tata Consulting Engineers completed the Front-End Engineering Design, the detailed engineering contract went to Toyo Engineering India.
The bigger signal for packaging and materials
For anyone in packaging, this is a glimpse of where material sourcing is heading. Brands are no longer satisfied with “recyclable” as a label. They want proof that the material is actually循环 — infinitely recyclable, virgin-quality, and decoupled from fossil feedstocks. A sports brand signing years ahead of a plant’s opening is the kind of forward commitment that makes the whole circular economy model finally pencil out.
The takeaway
Circular plastic has spent a decade being “almost there.” Deals like this — multi-year, multi-thousand-tonne, signed before a single brick is laid — are how it actually arrives. India is stepping onto the global stage as a circular-materials hub, and the brands placing early bets today will be the ones with secure, low-carbon supply chains tomorrow.
The hard part is still scaling
Optimism should stay measured. Depolymerization at this scale is proven in labs and early pilots, not yet at 15,000-tonne commercial volume. Feedstock quality, energy use, and consistent monomer purity are real engineering hurdles. Land acquisition and detailed engineering milestones still lie ahead before 2028.
But the commercial commitments are what change the equation. When global brands sign multi-year offtake years before a plant opens, they de-risk the build and pull the whole supply chain forward. Financing gets easier. Suppliers commit. Rivals take notice. That is how circular plastic finally stops being a conference topic and starts becoming infrastructure.
For sportswear especially, the prize is huge. Polyester dominates activewear, and its environmental footprint is enormous. If brands can source resin that is infinitely recyclable and virgin-quality, the circular story moves from marketing claim to manufacturing reality. ELITe’s India plant may be years from full operation, but the commitments signed today are the foundation it will stand on.
