Hozelock Adds Polytag Smart QR Codes to Connect Garden Products and Gather Usage Data

Polytag has partnered with garden-product maker Hozelock to introduce smart QR codes across its range, marking the first use of smart QR technology on garden products and giving customers instant access to product-specific guidance while providing Hozelock with unprecedented insight into how its products are actually used. The deployment is a neat illustration of how connected packaging is moving from pilots into mainstream consumer goods.

The smart QR codes, powered by Polytag’s platform, have been added to Hozelock products available through major retailers including B&Q. When scanned, the codes direct consumers to content tailored to their market and device language, letting Hozelock serve relevant information across international markets from a single QR code. That capability is especially valuable for Hozelock’s technical and higher-value garden products, where a printed carton alone cannot always carry the information customers need.

Beyond convenience, the digital connection lays a foundation for future product-level information requirements, including the digital product passports increasingly discussed by regulators in Europe and beyond. For a brand with a long tail of SKUs sold across many countries, a single scannable code is far cheaper and more flexible than reprinting packaging for every market and regulatory shift.

The data the deployment generates is where the story gets interesting. Between November 2025 and August 2026, the codes produced 11,399 scans and more than 3,610 minutes of engagement time, with an average dwell time of 19 seconds. That comfortably exceeds the reported industry average of 7.4 seconds, suggesting customers found the content genuinely useful rather than bouncing away. Engagement was recorded across 63 product SKUs and 1,344 locations, giving Hozelock a granular view of real-world usage it simply never had once a product left the retailer.

Hozelock has also used the technology as a marketing engagement tool. Ahead of major industry exhibitions including Spoga+Gafa and Glee, QR codes were placed on event invitations, letting recipients unlock teaser content showcasing upcoming product launches before their official unveiling at the shows. That turns the packaging channel into a controlled, measurable media surface.

Alice Rackley, CEO of Polytag, said Hozelock shows how smart QR technology can create value for both brands and consumers. Customers get useful, product-specific information at the moment they need it, while Hozelock gains visibility into how people engage with its products after purchase. For a brand selling technical products across multiple markets, she added, the ability to deliver the right information in the right language through one QR code is incredibly powerful, and the engagement levels show real consumer appetite for helpful digital content.

Alina Gordon, marketing and communications executive at Hozelock, said the company’s goal is always to make the customer experience as simple and helpful as possible. By incorporating Polytag QR codes onto packaging, Hozelock gives consumers instant access to the information they need while building a more connected relationship between products and customers. The technology has also opened exciting new ways to engage audiences, such as supporting product launch campaigns and exhibition activity.

For label converters and packaging printers, the Hozelock example is a useful template. Smart QR codes are inexpensive to print, require no special substrate, and unlock a data layer that persists for the life of the product. As brands seek differentiation and regulators push toward traceability, print itself becomes the gateway to a connected experience rather than the end of the communication.

The broader signal is that garden products, long considered a low-tech category, are now an early-adopter frontier for connected packaging. If smart QR codes can prove their worth on a hose reel or a pressure sprayer, the case for them on far more valuable consumer goods becomes considerably stronger.

The Hozelock deployment also highlights how smart QR differs from older connected-packaging bets. Earlier attempts leaned on NFC tags or proprietary apps that demanded consumer behaviour change; a QR code needs nothing more than a phone camera already in every pocket. That low friction is likely why dwell time ran so far above industry norms, and it is a useful lesson for brands planning their own programs: the technology only works if customers actually scan.

For smaller suppliers, the cost equation is the real story. A QR code costs almost nothing to print and places no burden on the substrate, yet it unlocks a persistent digital layer that travels with the product for its entire life. As regulators in several markets move toward mandatory product-level information, brands that built the channel early, as Hozelock has, will be far better placed than those scrambling to retrofit traceability at the last minute. The 19-second average engagement also tells content teams what to optimise: short, useful, localised guidance beats marketing fluff.

The campaign also shows how QR engagement data can feed product development. By seeing which markets and languages drive the most scans, Hozelock can prioritise localisation and support content where demand is real, turning a packaging feature into a continuous feedback loop rather than a one-off print run.
