Heidelberg Appoints Christoph Burkhard as CFO, Bringing Heavy-Industry Finance Experience to the Board

The Supervisory Board of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen has appointed Christoph Burkhard, aged 62, as a full member of the Executive Board and Chief Financial Officer of the company, effective October 1, 2026. In his role as CFO, Burkhard will take responsibility for Finance, Controlling, Investor Relations, M&A, Accounting, Legal, Tax and Information Security, a remit that places him at the center of the press maker’s financial strategy during a period of structural transition.

A Finance Career Across Cycles

Burkhard is currently CFO of construction equipment manufacturer Wacker Neuson. Before that, he served as CFO at Hamburg-based wind turbine manufacturer Nordex, a business whose capital intensity and project-financing demands share more with big industrial equipment than with consumer goods. He began his career as an analyst for the European Commission in Luxembourg before moving to BHF Bank in Frankfurt, giving him an early grounding in cross-border finance and regulation.

In 1998 Burkhard joined Siemens Financial Services in Munich, where he spent six years in the finance division structuring and negotiating project and export financing for Siemens’ operating units. That was followed by additional business leadership positions within the Siemens Group, giving him a rare combination of project-finance fluency and multinational operating experience that few pure-play print executives can match.

Why the Profile Fits Heidelberg

Heidelberg is the largest offset sheetfed press manufacturer in the world, but like its peers it is navigating a market where traditional press volumes are no longer the whole story. A CFO who has run finance for both wind turbines and construction equipment understands long-cycle capital goods, customer financing, and the discipline of protecting cash through a downturn, all of which are directly relevant to how a press maker supports its installed base and funds its own transformation.

The M&A responsibility is especially notable. As Heidelberg continues to broaden beyond pure offset, into services, software and adjacent industrial technology, deal-making discipline at the board level becomes a competitive factor. Burkhard’s background structuring export and project financing speaks to exactly the kind of capability a global capital-goods CFO needs when growth depends on smart, well-funded acquisitions rather than organic press sales alone.

What It Signals

Leadership changes at a company of Heidelberg’s scale are read by suppliers, customers and investors as signals about direction. A CFO drawn from heavy-industry finance rather than from within printing suggests a board focused on financial rigor, cash protection and disciplined diversification, not on nostalgia for the analog boom that defined the company’s peak years.

For printers and converters, the practical implication is continuity of financial support. Press purchases are capital decisions, and the health of the manufacturer’s balance sheet and its willingness to structure flexible financing affect what customers can actually buy. A CFO with deep project-finance credentials is well placed to keep that support flowing even when credit conditions tighten.

A Connected Industrial World

The appointment also underscores how interlinked the industrial equipment world has become. The skills that steer a wind-turbine maker through volatile demand are much the same as those a press manufacturer needs as it manages a smaller but more services-oriented business. Burkhard’s move from turbines to presses is less a departure than it looks, and his arrival signals that Heidelberg intends to be run with the financial discipline of a modern industrial group.

For the broader print supply chain, a stronger finance function at the industry’s largest press maker is reassuring. It implies steadier pricing, more reliable customer financing and a more credible roadmap for the services and software that increasingly define the value of a press investment over its working life.

The appointment lands as Heidelberg leans further into services and software, areas where recurring revenue matters more than one-off press sales and where financial discipline determines how aggressively the company can invest. A CFO comfortable with both heavy industry and deal-making is well placed to fund that shift without destabilizing the core.

It also sends a message to customers that the manufacturer behind their presses is being run prudently. In a market where press lives span decades, the financial health of the supplier is part of the buying decision, and a strengthened board adds quiet reassurance that support, parts and financing will be there for the long haul.

The appointment lands as Heidelberg leans further into services and software, areas where recurring revenue matters more than one-off press sales and where financial discipline determines how aggressively the company can invest. A CFO comfortable with both heavy industry and deal-making is well placed to fund that shift without destabilizing the core, and to judge which adjacencies deserve capital.

The broader signal is that capital-goods companies are borrowing talent across industries. A turbine-maker’s finance chief moving to a press maker would have been unusual a decade ago; today it reflects how similar the underlying businesses have become, built on long cycles, large orders and customers who finance their own capacity. Heidelberg is staffing for that reality rather than for the analog market of the past.
