BOBST Connect Matures Into Production Ecosystem With Proven Converter Gains

BOBST is highlighting the steady progress of BOBST Connect, its digitalization platform first introduced in 2022, as packaging converters increasingly turn to connected production systems to lift operational performance. What began as a remote monitoring tool has evolved into a broader ecosystem that links equipment, workflows, quality management, and factory software.

The platform gives converters real-time dashboards to monitor machine availability, downtime, and repeat-job performance, helping operators and production managers spot inefficiencies and act faster. At Stora Enso Packaging in Sweden, deployment across two converting plants produced a reported 4.4 percent increase in production capacity, a 3.3 percent improvement in production efficiency, and machine availability reaching 98.5 percent. Those are the kinds of hard numbers that justify software investment on a converter’s board agenda.

DS Smith, now part of International Paper, has also adopted BOBST Connect across its EMEA operations to consolidate machine data and digital services, supporting more consistent planning and production optimization. For large groups with dozens of sites, the appeal of a single pane of glass over disparate equipment is obvious.

BOBST has extended the platform well beyond monitoring. Energy Monitoring provides consumption data by machine, day, and job, giving converters a clearer picture of efficiency and sustainability performance. TooLink tracks tooling performance to flag potential wear before it triggers quality problems or unplanned downtime. Job and Recipe Management connects ERP information with production equipment, automatically transferring job specifications and returning performance data once a job completes.

Quality management is another active front. ACCUCHECK Recipe Management allows remote preparation of inspection parameters using information extracted from PDF artwork through AI-supported text recognition. Those recipes can then be pushed to connected inspection systems, reducing setup work and supporting consistent quality control across shifts and sites.

To bring older machines into the connected environment, BOBST offers its Connect Data Kit, extending production visibility beyond the newest installations. That retrofitting capability matters because most converters run mixed-age fleets and cannot justify ripping out serviceable equipment simply to gain data access.

The company acknowledges that adoption has required addressing legitimate concerns about cloud security, data management, and changes to established working practices. Training and process standardization have proven as important as the technical integration, particularly for converters moving from manual data collection to automated information flows. Culture, not just software, determines whether the dashboard gets used.

Looking forward, BOBST plans to push the platform toward more comprehensive factory integration, using plant-wide data to support predictive analytics, AI-driven optimization, and increasingly autonomous decision support. The longer-term ambition is to connect processes from order creation through production and delivery, letting packaging manufacturers manage equipment, quality, resources, and performance within one coordinated digital environment.

For converters, the trajectory illustrates how connected software and production data are becoming essential tools for squeezing more value from existing assets. In a margin-compressed industry, a few points of capacity or efficiency gained without new press investment can be the difference between a good and a difficult year.

BOBST Connect also reflects a strategic repositioning of the machinery maker from pure equipment vendor toward solutions and services provider. Recurring software and data services offer steadier revenue than cyclical capital equipment sales, and they deepen the relationship with the customer long after the press is installed.

As more converters embrace digitalization, the differentiator will shift from having data to knowing what to do with it. BOBST’s bet is that tightly integrated, workflow-aware platforms will win that next phase of competition.

The reported gains at Stora Enso deserve a closer read, because they reveal what connected platforms actually deliver in practice. A 4.4 percent capacity increase without new machinery is effectively free throughput, the kind of number that quietly reshapes a converter’s return on existing assets. But the harder lesson is cultural: BOBST’s own admission that cloud security and changed working habits slowed adoption is the honest part of the story most vendors omit. Dashboards only create value when operators trust them and managers act on them, which means change management, not bandwidth, is the real bottleneck. The Connect Data Kit is the smart commercial move here, because it lets BOBST monetize older installed bases rather than waiting for full fleet replacement. For an industry that buys presses on decade-long cycles, that continuity of relationship is gold. The forward path toward predictive analytics and autonomous decision support is ambitious, and converters should watch whether the promised AI delivers operational autonomy or merely another subscription. Either way, BOBST has shifted the conversation from selling iron to selling insight, and that is where packaging margins will increasingly be won or lost. For converters still debating where to start, the lesson from these deployments is to instrument what they already own before buying anything new, because the fastest returns almost always hide inside existing fleets rather than in the next capital request.
