Polytag has announced a partnership with Multi-Color Corporation’s Global IML business unit to integrate its UV tag technology into in-mold labeled packaging for the first time, enabling brands to capture consumer recycling data and support advanced sorting capabilities across a broader range of packaging applications, including frozen foods. The collaboration marks a significant expansion for connected packaging technology, moving UV-based traceability from pressure-sensitive labels into a packaging format that has traditionally been harder to track through the recycling stream.
How UV Tags Work as Invisible Digital Fingerprints
Polytag’s UV tag acts as an invisible digital fingerprint, readable by detection units installed at material recovery facilities. Unlike visible QR codes or printed markers that can be damaged, obscured, or removed during the recycling process, UV tags carry packaging-specific data that cannot be determined from visual identification alone. The tags encode information including material composition, recycled content, and material origin — data that is critical for accurate sorting but impossible to assess by eye when a package arrives at a recycling plant mixed with thousands of other items.
The data captured at sorting facilities is fed back to brands through the Polytag platform, creating a feedback loop that has been largely absent from packaging sustainability efforts. Until now, brands have had limited visibility into what actually happens to their packaging after consumers dispose of it. Polytag’s system closes that gap, giving brands verifiable data on recycling rates and material recovery outcomes.
Why This Matters for EPR and Packaging Design
The recycling data generated by UV tags has immediate commercial relevance. Brands can use it to offset Extended Producer Responsibility fees — regulatory costs that are increasingly tied to demonstrated recycling performance rather than theoretical recyclability. In markets where EPR frameworks penalize brands for packaging that fails to be recovered, having verified data showing that your packaging is actually being sorted and recycled is a direct financial advantage.
Beyond EPR cost management, the data informs packaging design decisions. If UV tag readings show that a particular IML container is consistently mis-sorted at recovery facilities, the brand can investigate whether the material composition, shape, or labeling format is creating confusion for optical sorters and make targeted design changes. This evidence-based approach to packaging optimization is far more effective than designing for recyclability in theory and hoping for the right outcome in practice.
The Demonstration with Happy Cow and Pellenc ST
The two companies have already collaborated on a demonstration involving Happy Cow’s faux-brand tub packaging, organized with GS1 and optical-sortation company Pellenc ST, to showcase how connected packaging and advanced sorting technologies can improve material recovery for IML packaging. The demonstration proved that UV tags embedded in IML containers can be reliably detected by commercial sorting equipment at line speed, validating the technology for real-world deployment.
Polytag’s UV tag technology has previously been deployed on milk bottles for Waitrose and Ocado, establishing a track record in pressure-sensitive label formats. The extension into IML packaging represents a strategic step forward, as IML is widely used for tubs, containers, and frozen food packaging — formats that are growing rapidly but have been underserved by connected packaging solutions.
Scaling Connected Packaging Across Formats
Alice Rackley, CEO of Polytag, noted that working with MCC allows the company to extend the reach of its technology and scale into new packaging formats, helping brands access valuable recycling data while preparing for the future of connected packaging. Jon Anderson, chief technology officer at Polytag, added that for connected packaging to deliver real value, it needs to work across as many packaging formats as possible — and extending into IML packaging is an important step forward.
MCC’s Global IML business unit brings deep expertise in in-mold labeling production and a broad customer base across food, beverage, and personal care brands. The partnership combines Polytag’s traceability technology with MCC’s manufacturing scale, creating a pathway from demonstration projects to commercial-scale deployment that individual technology startups rarely achieve alone.
As regulatory pressure on packaging recyclability intensifies across Europe, North America, and Asia, the demand for verified recycling data will continue to grow.
