zipcon consulting has published a provocative white paper titled “Agentic Print – Print Becomes Infrastructure,” arguing that the next customer for many print providers may not be a human browsing a website, but an artificial intelligence agent capable of independently researching suppliers, comparing capabilities, and placing production orders. The report, authored by Bernd Zipper — founder and CEO of zipcon consulting and Chairman of Initiative Online Print (IOP) — contends that printers who fail to make their products and services machine-readable risk becoming invisible to the next generation of commerce platforms.
The Rise of AI-Driven Commerce Protocols
The paper traces this shift to the emergence of new AI-driven commerce standards that are fundamentally rethinking how goods and services are discovered, evaluated, and purchased online. Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), OpenAI and Stripe’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), and Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) all share a common premise: rather than relying on customers to browse storefronts manually, AI agents can evaluate structured product information, delivery capabilities, sustainability credentials, and production specifications automatically before making purchasing decisions.
This represents a paradigm shift from the web-to-print model that has dominated online print commerce for two decades. In the current paradigm, a human customer visits a website, selects products, uploads artwork, and confirms an order. In the agentic paradigm, an AI assistant — acting on behalf of a brand, a marketing department, or even another software system — queries multiple suppliers simultaneously, evaluates their offerings against defined criteria, and places the order with the best match. The entire transaction may happen in seconds, without a human ever visiting a print provider’s website.
Standards Development Already Underway
The print industry’s response is already taking shape. A dedicated UCP Print Vertical is being developed through collaboration between Initiative Online Print, BVDM, Intergraf, CIP4, Ghent Workgroup, PRINTING United Alliance, and other international organizations. A formal standards proposal is expected later this year, which would establish structured data formats and interoperability protocols enabling AI agents to understand print product specifications in a standardized way.
The involvement of CIP4 — the organization that maintains the JDF/JMF standards already used in production workflow automation — signals a natural extension from machine-to-machine communication on the factory floor to machine-to-machine communication in the commercial marketplace. If JDF enabled presses and prepress systems to exchange job instructions, the UCP Print Vertical would enable AI purchasing agents to exchange product queries and production capabilities.
From PDF Price Lists to Structured Data
Zipper’s warning is stark: “Anyone who currently lists their services only in PDF price lists is invisible to an AI agent. This isn’t just a pipe dream; it’s already a reality.” The implication is that print providers whose product data exists only in unstructured formats — PDFs, images, HTML pages designed for human readability — will be bypassed by AI agents that require structured, queryable data to make purchasing decisions.
This mirrors the broader digital transformation that other industries have already undergone. When travel agents disappeared, it was because airlines and hotels made their inventory available through structured APIs. When procurement moved online, it was because suppliers published machine-readable product catalogs. The print industry now faces the same transition, but with additional complexity: print products are inherently customizable, with specifications that vary by substrate, size, finishing, colour mode, and delivery requirements.
Opportunities Beyond Price Competition
While the white paper presents significant challenges, it also identifies opportunities for printers that differentiate themselves beyond price alone. Zipper notes that AI agents can evaluate factors such as verified sustainability data, delivery performance, and production capabilities — allowing value-added services to become measurable and competitive once again. In the current market, where online print platforms often reduce every transaction to a price comparison, Agentic Print could actually restore nuance to the purchasing process by enabling AI agents to weigh multiple criteria simultaneously.
Companies that help establish future standards will also influence how AI-driven commerce develops, gaining early positioning advantages. The report stresses that Agentic Print extends beyond customer acquisition, requiring integration with automated production workflows, print-on-demand manufacturing, and intelligent factory operations. In other words, becoming visible to AI agents is just the first step; being able to fulfil their orders through automated processes is the second.
The Next Transformation After Web-to-Print
For the print industry, Agentic Print could represent the next major transformation after web-to-print — moving from human-driven e-commerce to machine-driven procurement built on open standards, structured product data, and fully automated manufacturing ecosystems. Print providers that recognize this shift early and begin structuring their product data, developing API capabilities, and automating their production workflows will be positioned to capture demand from a new class of customer that does not browse, compare, or negotiate in the ways humans do.
Those that delay risk a fate similar to travel agents and traditional procurement intermediaries: not disappearing because their services became unnecessary, but becoming invisible because the interfaces through which demand flows no longer recognise them.
