The Foil & Specialty Effects Association (FSEA) has announced the honourees for its 33rd Annual Gold Leaf Awards Competition, and the results paint a vivid picture of an industry that is thriving, innovating, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible with print embellishment. With 450 submissions received from countries around the world—breaking the previous record by more than 100 entries—the 2026 competition demonstrates that print embellishment is not merely surviving in the digital age but flourishing as brands and designers recognise its unique ability to create tactile, visually stunning experiences that digital media cannot replicate.
The geographic spread of entries underscores the global nature of the printing industry and the universal appeal of high-quality embellishment. Submissions were received from the United States, Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, Australia, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates. This international participation reflects the fact that print embellishment—whether through traditional foil stamping and embossing or cutting-edge digital effects—is a global language of luxury, quality, and attention to detail.
FSEA Executive Director Jeff Peterson captured the essence of the competition: “It never ceases to amaze me when seeing the wonderful designs and innovative uses of embellishments – from more conventional processes to new digital technologies. Print and print embellishments are alive and well. Our competition is a prime example of how popular print embellishments are in many different industries.”
Two entries were recognised with the prestigious Best of Show honour, each representing excellence in different approaches to embellishment. Spectrum Packaging Corporation received the Best of Show award for best use of traditional foil and embossing techniques for its entry “The Chronicles of SPC.” This annual self-promotional production features intricate diecutting, multi-layer, multi-pass foil stamping, embossing, and spot UV across 27 individual components. Built around the concept of a hinged book, the outer structure consists of two separate cartons joined with tabs, allowing it to open and close like a book. When opened, the outer carton transforms into a bookshelf, revealing 12 individual folding carton “books” on the righthand side. The complexity and craftsmanship of this piece exemplify the heights of traditional print embellishment.
The Best of Show award for best use of digital embellishment techniques went to ADC Nederland for its “ADC Braille Children’s Book.” This Gold Award-winning entry in the category of Best Use of Embellishments – Client Promotion/Brochure is a colourful, oversized, spiral-bound children’s picture book that presents the story of a little monkey’s quest with bright, vivid illustrations and carefully chosen tactile elements. On the left-hand pages are large black text and transparent raised braille dots on white paper; on the right are colourful illustrations of the story with raised outlines and raised patterned fills of the main visual elements. The integration of digital embellishment technology with inclusive design for visually impaired children represents a powerful example of how print technology can serve both aesthetic and social purposes.
The competition categories reflect the diverse applications of print embellishment across industries. Categories include hardback and softback book covers, greeting cards, folding cartons, rigid boxes, labels, business cards, announcements and invitations, calendars, direct mail, and miscellaneous items. The range of techniques recognised includes hot foil stamping, embossing, specialty coatings, digital foil and spot coatings, laser cutting, special diecuts, cold foil transfer, holographics, letterpress, and unique binding and folding techniques.
The judging process recognises excellence at multiple levels. Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards are given in each category, with the Gold winners representing the pinnacle of achievement in their respective areas. From the Gold winners, the two Best of Show honourees are selected, representing the absolute best in traditional and digital embellishment techniques.
For the printing industry, the FSEA Gold Leaf Awards serve multiple important functions. They provide recognition for the often-unsung craftsmanship that goes into creating exceptional printed products. They inspire printers, designers, and brands to push the boundaries of what is possible. And they demonstrate to the broader business community that print remains a powerful, versatile, and culturally significant medium.
As brands increasingly seek to differentiate themselves in crowded markets, the role of print embellishment is likely to grow. In a world saturated with digital advertising and online content, a beautifully embellished piece of print—whether it is a luxury product package, a high-end brochure, or a specially commissioned invitation—creates a lasting impression that digital media struggles to match. The tactile experience of embossed lettering, the visual impact of perfectly applied foil, the sensory appeal of specialty coatings—these are the elements that make print unique.
The record-breaking number of entries in the 33rd Annual FSEA Gold Leaf Awards Competition suggests that the printing industry is embracing this reality with enthusiasm and creativity. As the 2026 competition demonstrates, print embellishment is not a relic of the past but a vibrant, evolving field that continues to find new applications, adopt new technologies, and delight customers around the world.
